Sometimes replacing something in the system and not getting all the air
bled out causes this issue and a worn-out pump also can do it..... but
usually they just make noise.
This assumes that your speaking about the Thompson (Ford) p/s pump style.
They're kinda a PITA for any kind of performance use.
Directly responding to your question-
1) There is no O-ring at the cap for the Ford pump. It's a paper-style gasket.
2) The system gets hot (really hot) with high performance use. Synthetic
p/s fluid doesn't expand to the same extent that regular Ford p/s fluid does.
3) Make sure with your fluid level (cold) it is NOT overfilled. I leave just
enough fluid to cover the "guts" inside. Properly filled, the way Ford specifies,
is TOO high a fluid level for track use. (5000+ rpm)
4) The Ford pump is massively over-driven with the pulley sizes you usually
see. About a 6" pulley will slow that beast down, increasing the feel of what
is otherwise a pretty much "dead" feeling stock system. This makes the pump
work easier and the fluid stays cooler.
5) Most reman pumps (and older still operating) pumps have a totally worn-out front bushing. (The one behind the p/s pulley) A worn out bushing in
this area greatly increases the operating temp of the fluid.
The car in the photo below has a heavily-modified p/s system......
