Re: Nine inch housings

I will add a few "large bearing" dimensions for those interested.

The axle diameter at the bearing of a stock 28 spline Versailles axle is 1.525". The O/S diameter of the bearing is 3.149"

Re: Nine inch housings

I purchased a housing, now i have a question, would it be possible to just purchase a 31 spline detroit locker and use that with the same ring and pinion (i think thats the right word). I mean the locker would go in the middle, and thats what would have the 28 or 31 splines right?

It came with 28 spline axle shafts, but as we all know now those cannot be shortened.

Also is there any sort of factory parts conversion that i can use to put disc on it, i heard that the 8.8 explorer disc brakes are a direct swap. Just wondering because while it does have 11 inch drums those are quite huge.

Yes, you can use your ring and pinion with the 31 spline locker. They are the same.

The only other thing needed for the conversion will be the 31 spline axles with the appropriate wheel bearings for your housing/axles.

Re: Nine inch housings

Yes, the Explorer disc brakes will work if you have the correct flange/bearing set-up. I had the large bearing flanges installed on my rearend when it was getting narrowed and added the Currie disc kit which I believe is just a Ford part in their box.

I went through Summit when I bought the kit and if I had known I could have stepped up the cross drilled rotors for another $30 or so but wasn't told that! Oh well.

Re: Nine inch housings

Well i think that is good news for me then because i'm fairly certain i have the large bearing housing. It at least has no taper on the inside, and i had the 11 inch drums, plus the pics that i've seen on the internet comparing shafts mine look like the large bearing ones. So i would assume i have the large bearing flanges and that therefore i can just buy the kit correct?
