Re: double your miles per gallon
I've seen a couple of folks online who distill their own moonshine. IIRC, one guy was selling plans and recipe for a still that could whip up 30-40 gallons of fuel grade corn squeezins in a weekend.
If gas goes to $10/gallon then changing out the fuel hoses to something alcohol compatible and firing up a still sounds like fun. Heck, it just sounds like fun.
Then what I'd need is a few old wine casks so I can age some of the "extra" for a spell.

Re: double your miles per gallon
The hydrogen thing has been done to death, it's just another perpetual motion machine. The hydrogen produced causes less fuel consumption, and water is free right? But, it takes the same amount of energy to separate the H2/O2 as you get recombining it in the combustion chamber. It takes electricity from your alternator to create the hydrogen, alternator is driven by the engine, and none of these processes are anywhere near 100% efficient, so all your fancy mobile electrolysis lab did was add more load/loss to the engine.

Re: double your miles per gallon
As I posted, I know it won't work, but I'm curious to see WHAT it does,
My idea was to see what kind of pressure a sealed plastic 5 gal bucket could hold (my electrolysis chamber) and run an ammeter to see what it draws from the electrical system, and see what kind of differences it might make.
I'm not saying I'll be petroleum independant, I'm not saying my MPG will double, I'm saying I'd be curious to see what I see!
What if I ran a few lead acid batteries in the bed of the truck, charged em at home from the grid (120v ac charger) overnight and then used them to produce HHO on my 7 mile drive to work?
What if aliens come down and steal that technology from me?
What if the government is monitoring this post?
What if you guys never hear from me again?
Will I ever have a 'stash like FE?
Will my wife ever wear a flight suit?
Will I ever finish my stroker MAch?
Lot's of unanswered ?s and What ifs.
Will I unlock the keys to cold fusion and become a gazillionaire? (no, probably not).
Could I create a huge hydrogen cloud and blow up my garage and or truck? Possibly.

Re: double your miles per gallon
To answer your question indirectly, it would take HUNDREDS of amps continuously pumped into the 'electrolysis bucket' to produce enough H2 and O2 to get your engine to even idle independent of gasoline. Those gimmicky setups they are trying to sell you produce a few liters of H2 and O2 per hour. A few LITERS per HOUR. Keep in mind most of us have engines that can consume 5 liters if air in two revolutions. At 2000rpm, that's potentially 300,000 liters per hour under full load, and closer to 50,000 liters per hour at a normal highway cruise load. That 50,000 liters of air is 20% oxygen, so your electrolysis bucket would only have to produce a mere 10,000 liters per hour to completely replace the gasoline. Producing 100 liters per hour (more than any gimmicky kit you can buy) will contribute to 1% of the energy your engine is consuming, thus improving mileage 1%. To produce enough H2 and O2 to even make a DENT in the fuel consumption, it would drain a car battery in minutes, especially considering the efficiency of electrolysis of water is around 50-80%. Combine that with the ~30% thermal efficiency of the internal combustion engine, and you'd be way ahead of the game to just directly power an electric motor.

All very valid questions...
But, you'll NEVER have the cool stache that I gots I'm keepin ' this patented But you can dress your wife in anything you want...

Re: double your miles per gallon
It would take a great number of amps and a tremendous amount of water to run an engine off of hydrogen produced from electrolosis.
Think of it this way:
15 pounds of air for each pound of gasoline.
it takes 2 pounds of hydrogen to 1 pound of oxygen to run. That means that three pounds of water to replace each 3 pounds of gasoline. How much water do you think these "hydrogen generators" actually go through?
These "generators" are the biggest frauds that are going today. The worst part is the math doesn't even make any sense!

Re: double your miles per gallon
OK, so I'll stick with the full beard thing - it's worked so far.
I'll take my wife shopping.
I'll look for a DC motor and controller to run off deep cycle batteries to augment my mileage in the truck (really, a 14 mile round trip on back roads at 45 should be feasible with electric) Ohhhh, making my own hybrid - I can't wait to hear why that won't work!
And finally, I'll leave the math to you guys on the board with the time & dedication to prove things wrong in writing while I play with my kids.

Re: double your miles per gallon
I distill my own booze and it takes two 25L buckets of "mash" - fermented sugar - to produce 5L of 95% ethanol.
At the moment, gasoline is still cheaper than brewing your own ethanol.

Re: double your miles per gallon
Gasoline is only cheaper if you have to pay for the raw materials and fuel to heat the still. If you can get sweet fruit (apples, grapes, pears, plums, etc.) for free, build your own press, and build a "burp" still you can make alcohol for free. I believe there is a program where you can distill up to 10000 gallons a year without having to pay taxes or having to denature the alcohol you produce.
The proble is that you are still limited to travelling no further than 1/2 tank of fuel. Thats about 200 - 250 miles with a 25 gallon tank. You can't substitute gasoline for fuel in an engine that is set up for optimum use of alcohol. The carb runs too rich and the compression is too high.
you only need 80% (160 proof) to make a great fuel.
