MSD 6AL vs mallory dual point

When I tried to start the boat engine the first time I had no spark. I immediately wired the MSD OUT. I needed the motor running to break in the cam so I just switched back to the original system. Since the oil pressure issue I just haven't gotten back to the MSD yet.

I have a dual point tach drive Mallory distributor, it's new. I read somewhere that the msd won't work with the mallory dual point distributor? I'm using the white (for points triggering) wire but had no spark.

I'm wondering if someone was right but I can't remember now where I read that. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Re: MSD 6AL vs mallory dual point

You can run the Mallory dual point with the MSD, but as noted you will only need one set of points in the distributor. The instructions say to remove the trailing set of points.

Re: MSD 6AL vs mallory dual point

The MSD will work with the Mallory, but it's best to pull one set of points out. The MSD will wire like this:

Big red wire- to battery.
Big black wire- to ground.
small red wire- to ignition switch.
small black wire- to negative side of coil.
small orange wire- to positive side of the coil.
small white wire- to the distributor.

Most people try to hook the small red wire to the positive side of the coil along with the orange wire, and it will not run this way.
