carb oxidyzes after soaking in carb cleaner

I soaked a 2V Ford carb in CRC TYME-1 which is a carb and parts cleaner that comes in a 5 gallon bucket. I first looked at the carb after about 20 hours and it looked good. I did not have the rebuild kit and wanted to make sure the carb was extra clean so I left the carb in and removed it today after 2 days of soaking. Now the carb looks burnt and has white oxydation on it and in it. I called the CRC tech hotline and left my number and still have not heard back. Has anyone else had this problem? What can I do with the carb nowto reclean it?

You can try washing it in soap and water.

Re: carb oxidyzes after soaking in carb cleaner

Never had any luck with the regular parts store carb soak buckets.

The ONLY thing I will use anymore is Yamaha carb cleaner....man this stuff is awesome! It will not harm the finish of any carb not even polished surfaces but it'll clean ANY carb for the most part! Takes a while but at least it doesn't eat the finish off.

All that's happened is the skin of the aluminum has been tken back to it's natural state, nearly...

They LOVE to go dark gray when you soak them...

If it's too much for you you can alway's steel wool and aluminim polish it...

Re: carb oxidyzes after soaking in carb cleaner

Thanks for the response. CRC did call back and I told them what happened and of course I got "we never heard of that happening". They are suppose to call back after talking to a chemist. My concern is the ozidation that is now on the carb. Im worrying obout the functionability of the carb at this point. Its a shame that the car the carb came off of is a 71 LTD with 11,000 miles on it. Any more ideas on what to do?

Wash it with a vinegar and salt water bath. 1 tablespoon of salt, 1 cup of vinegar and a quart of water. Rinse in very hot water and blow dry with compressed air. That will remove any of the white powdery "fuzz" type of oxydation and clean the bare aluminum. Next time don't leave it in the cleaner so long.

Re: carb oxidyzes after soaking in carb cleaner

Thanks for the reply Paul. I already washed it in vinegar yesterday before you replied. I used straight vinegar and that did the trick. As far as not leaving the carb in so long, I have left other carbs soaking for days without problems. The funny part is, the manufacture called me and said they never heard of this problem.
