Stock Rockers to Roller Rockers....

What does it take to change from stock rockers to a set of roller rockers? I heard you had to have guideplates.... Is that true for every application?

What engine? What heads? What cam? and why?

There are many kinds of rocker arms, some are fully rollerize, others less so.

the first division is stud mounted vs. bolt-on. Bolt on rollers can "usually" be installed directly in place of factory rocker arms; so your only issue is whether they are made for the engine and heads you have. The other question, why(?) - goes to the heart of is this just "window dressing" or do you have a reason for making the change.

Re-phrase your question...I'm sure members will be happy to help you make the right decision.

And make sure to have the right length pushrods. Especially if going to fully rollerized rockers with a roller trunnion.

Re: Stock Rockers to Roller Rockers....

My 289 has slotted guides that do not require guide plates. If your heads are round hole for the pushrods then guide plates will be a good idea. They stopped using slotted heads and used rail rockers mid way in 1966. Putting on roller rockers is to lower the friction as well valve guide wear, the standard rocker arms have a slight pulling motion where a roller when set up properly pushes down in the center of the valve stem.
