Steering column play or lash

I have too much play in my steering wheel. I was told it was a sleeve that needs to be replaced. What is the sleeve and how do I replace it. Or, how do I remove the play in the steering wheel.

Re: Steering column play or lash

It could be several things from steering box, tie rods and any other parts of the steering linkage. You will have to check each component (s) to determine your fault. It's very hard to tell from here. Steering box is easy to check by having someone slowly turn the steering wheel back and forth and you eying the output shaft. Same with the tie rods.

If all the parts are old, it's probably some of everything.

There is a bearing adjustment on steering box on the older models that can in some cases can rid some of the slop. If you over tighten the adjuster you will crush the bearing.

Re: Steering column play or lash

WHAT kind of play do you have?

Do you need an exploded view of the column?

Yes, I need an exploded view. As for the play, the steering wheel turns almost 90 degrees before the wheels turn (to the left).

Re: Steering column play or lash

The vehicle is a 1995 Ford F150 4x4. It is not the front suspension components. The steering wheel turns approx. 90 degrees before anything else moves. Is this the gear box?

Re: Steering column play or lash

if the stearing wheel moves 90* before the stearing arm moves then most likely the box is shot or it may take some adjustment...
There should be a nut with like an allen head or a slotted screw head sticking out of eather the center top of the box or out the side.. thats the adjusting bolt. Don't over tighten the bolt tho...
