Re: paint job - OUCH!!!

I can see $3,000 to $4,500 for a FANTASTIC paint job.

But this $10,000 stuff is PURE BULLSCHITT.

I FRIKIN DO this stuff. Not back the the 1980's but NOW.

Someone is STEALING from you if you pay $6,000 just to paint your damn car.

It only takes about 40 hours to do a smack down bang up job on a little old mustng, and your car will look as good if not better than any fuctard with a $10,000 dollar paintjob.

I get FUMING HOT when I hear crap like this.

Some retard paid $40K for a Shelby paint job up near Seattle. EVERYONE I know that looked at teh sumbich said it didn't look no better than what I put on my sister's 66 mustang when I restored that car... And that was a 40 hour prep ($2,200 labor $900 material) paint job. Grand total on the paint and body was less than $4K

So screw them damn theiving shops

This I'm talking about is a no rust and only a wrinkle here and there paint job.

Re: paint job - OUCH!!!

well we did a 68 super bee hear a little while back had the car for alomst a year we waited around alot for parts but we probabaly replaced 75% with no exaduration of the car sheet metal the entire underside was body worked and sprayed yellow to match al lthe graphics were painted burried in clear so you can see or feel the edges it was blocked perfectly straight and had probabaly 60+ hours of cut and buff time and it was in the 40,000+ range thats what people want and im sure most people when you start looking can tell the difference between a $3,000 and a $10,000 paint job i know i could when you look down the side and its got more waves then the ocean thats not quality anyone can do that. you can walk around a show and point out the nice work from the not so nice work if i was sepnding money on paint and body i would look around at shoes and ask people who did the work for them and when you find the quality and price you like try to work something out its all in the details

Re: paint job - OUCH!!!

WHat you did above is a restoration and heavily modified paint job, which is almost restoring a car, not just painting it.

There is NO reason to charge $6,000 to paint a car UNLESS you charge $75 bucks per hour and take 80 hours to do it...

I did a paint course through a community college that was part of a Toyota collision repair program. Its not uncommon for painters to make in excess of $75 per hour granted they aren't working all the time. The guys who are good go off to BMW or Mercedes and are paid to attend their training get paid a lot more.

The cheap way take a paint course at a community college. They usually have a special projects section, then you only pay for supplies. It's a lot of work to paint a car, repairing a paint job I think is a bigger b#$ch though.

Re: paint job - OUCH!!!

I was out checking for a price to do my car and the local shops won't even look at a private car because they say they can make better money doing insurance work . they make good money and the quality of the work don't need to be vary good . they say Private guys are to cheep and they are to fussy .There isn't one of these guys that do a good job .

Re: paint job - OUCH!!!

Thanks for all the feedback and discussion. It looks like I need to deal with a shop that's willing to just do some minor body work and then shoot the paint without feeling like it needs to be show quality. There is a local MAACO so I'll check with them to see what they can do.

mustang42782, I'm in Colorado.

I've considered doing at least the body work myself, but I've been really short on time for doing any work on my car this year. I was thinking if I can't be racing it or doing other mods then at least I could be getting it painted. I'll do some more shopping around to see what I can come up with.

I did completes for years but went the insurance route too.

Its not a matter of quality, matter of fact blending paint during a repair takes as much skill than squirting a whole car, maybe more depending on color and what you are trying to match your repair to.

However, with current products that dry quickly and can be taped/buffed in hours, I can fix a quarter panel on Monday, shoot that night, block and buff (if required) on Tuesday and deliver for a 1000 or better. Add three of four guys per shop, its good business and you dont have to tie up your cash or space, etc. Plus collecting 1000, 2000 or even 3000 for parts and labor from an insurance company is far easier than getting it from an individal.

I wont comment on your prices without seeing the car, but I will say that costs are high, look around at rent and electricity costs for a building that holds multiple cars, big compressors that can keep up with someone trying to earn a living, employees need to get paid, permits and waste disposal, and of course materials. It adds up quick

If you can find someone good that will work cheap, use them, but most cheap guys arent good and good guys arent cheap

Another option if any are around are vocational schools and/or prisons. Might be worth checking

I actually considered farming my 71 F-100 out, I had expected to ay 10 grand. Unfortunately, as a guy who does it, I dont trust many other guys, and the one I wanted to do it is too busy. Looks like I have at least one more complete in my future

Re: paint job - OUCH!!!

I made a deal with a local painter, to do 100% body work and prep myself, roll it in the booth completely ready to go and had him shoot the base clear. He used Sherwin Williams and laid on plenty of clear to give me room to color sand it out. Cost me 700.

Paint looks great...can't say the same with my bodywork but its not bad.

Re: paint job - OUCH!!!

Here's an update - I got an estimate from MAACO yesterday, and it'll run me about $1400 to get all of the work done I was looking for including prepping the fiberglass hood, some minor bodywork, cutting the rear fenders for more tire clearance, and adding Lemans stripes. It's understood that this will not be a top-notch paint job, but that's what I was looking for to begin with.

I'll try to post pics when done (probably be in 6 or 8 weeks).
