Alternator Wiring Question - Help!

Guys,

Havent posted for ages so hope all are well.

It would appear I have bought probably not the most appropriate alternator for my 87' 351 Windsor which is stroked to 393ci. The problem is the wiring loom supplied with my Cobra replica only has two wires that go to the alternator; a thick red which is from the battery & a thin blue which goes to the charge light on the dash. I have spoken to the replica manufacturer who advises the loom is setup for an alternator with an internal voltage regulator however my alternator is for an external regulator so heres my questions:

1) What is the best type of external voltage regulator to buy?

2) How do I wire the alternator to the voltage regulator making use of the existing battery & charge light wires in my loom?

For information the alternator is 100amp & has the following terminals:

STA
BAT
FLD
GRD

I could change the alternator for the correct one but the existing one is installed & matched to all the bracketry, pulleys etc so I am reluctant to
replace it.

Any help with this would be appreciated as I am a complete novice when it comes to automotive wiring.

You gotta get a one wire alternator....

Your old setup should have been something like this bottom photo, but not as old obviously...

Do you know the Series of your ALT?

...is for changing a 3G Type to an external regulator. You will also need to buy or fab a charging harness.

Thanks for the responses thus far.
I have managed to get in touch with the supplier of the alternator & he advises it is a G1 suitable for a 65' - 68 Mustang. Additionally he tells me the correct voltage regulator is Ford PN D9PF-10316-AA.

Any thoughts on the wiring requirements or voltage regulator reccomendation appreciated.

You can save youself a lot of time and headaches by purchasing a 1-wire alterntor. They are a-dime-a-dozen on ebay. However, as mentioned previously, if you want a quality alternator, go online to PA Performance. They'll get you exactly what you need.

It is a 1G Series.



The above schematic is for a 1G with ALT warning lamp or ammeter. You can buy these harnesses made up or pull one off a donor car.

You do not want a GM style one-wire ALT.
