Re: best budget automotive paint
Hey FAST, you can use that old enamel, it don't need clear, but Base Coat isn;'t that expensive really...
For Base, Reducer, Clear and catalyst you can still be under $300.
Acryllic Enamel takes a full day to dry, becasue it is an Air Cure paint.
But you can apply it over and over again if you like, but I prefer base coat clear coat myself.

Re: best budget automotive paint
I use Nason also adn really like it. PPG also sells OMNI, which is another cheap BC/CC paint, which I have used on the FJ40 I'm doing.

Re: best budget automotive paint
I've also used Nason with good results. Easy to spray, hard to screw up...and if you do, spray it on a little thick and cut it when it's done.
Picked up a full gallon of Nason grabber blue for $92 which included catalyst, reducer, cups, filter funnel things, and a box to put it all in. That was a urethane paint.

Re: best budget automotive paint
I painted my car and my brother-in-laws car with "kirker" paint. It is a acryllic urethane, you can get it for around 80 bucks for 3/4gal and the catylist. It does not need a clear coat but it can be clear coated and you can mix up to 50% clear in the final coat of paint as well. I have sprayed it both ways and it shines great. My galaxie looks like its plugged in when it is in the bright sun!! Check out "smartshoppers.com" you can get a "kit" with 1 gal urethane primer,1 gal. clear and 3/4 gal paint and catylist, filters, stir sticks and tape for like $220.00. I agree you get what you pay for but as another post on here said ,when people want 5k or 6k to paint a car I'll buy my cheap paint and paint it 10 times and have money left over!!

Re: best budget automotive paint
I've been using the Kirker urethane from smartshoppers.com for over a year now and like the paint. there are a couple of the products I haven't been thrilled with (the hotrod black and the vision clear) I just bought 2 quarts of the Spectra UCC500 clear that is sold for the candy paint and sprayed a test piece with it and really like the way it lays out and the gloss. The cost of the paint is really reasonable being around $50 for a 3 quart gallon and $18.00 for the quart of activator to make a gallon of paint. I did my sons car with the kirker and was pretty happy with the results. The problems we encountered were strictly my fault and not the paints with the exception of some issues with the aforementioned hotrod black. The car is a decent 10 footer but again, the flaws were mine, not the paints (we actually painted outside without any cover or a booth) I will be using the Kirker urethane on my 65 gal although to the relief of DeadHorse and maybe some others I have rethought my original paint scheme. The thought of viper yellow on a car that large has started to look like "pimp my ride" after the better part of a year looking at it photoshopped on the computer, so I have decided to go with starburst black on the whole car with the exception of a pair of painted on somewhat stylized pinstripes down the sides. Here's a shot of the fiero we did for my son......DISCLAIMER.... he picked the car and the color, otherwise he would have been driving a FOMOCO product.
