Re: Quick Transmission Question
the only one I know of that was designed to be pushstarted was anything that used an early Powerglide (GM) transmission. Many of them had a rear pump. Out put shaft turned the pump, pump supplied a little fluid to the converter and low gear servo and allowed push start capability. Later PG's did not have the rear pump.
Ford? Not sure. I can't see how they would have push start capability (speaking of a C4, C5, C6, AOD, etc). When teh engine is off, there is no hydraulic pressure so the converter is basically "dry"-relatively speaking. You need a converter full of fluid and a clutch engaged to make the engine turn over.
Matter of fact, speaking from experience....a C4 won't push start at all. I lost brakes at the end of a run once in my Mustang and killed the ignition to help slow it down. Once it lost pressure, it was freewheeling....luckily I was able to start it back up and pull it into low before I ended up in a chicken house.
