Re: Harmonic balancer confusion

I'll have to admit that the elastomer looks different in the Ebay pic. The 351W 28oz. looks like it too. As far as quality-it looks to be well made, if that is a faithful representation of the part, the elastomer is molded better than most.
This seller doesn't have a huge amount of transactions, but he has a 100% positive feed-back rating. There are some more balancers for around the same price range that the elastomer is easy to spot in the pics. I think balancers are overpriced anyway for what they are.
The simple solution would be to ask the seller, but I'll bet its not solid steel. If it was it could be SFI certified and he could sell them for $150 a piece.lol.

I decided to wait. The one I have has a small groove in it. I might go for the repair sleeve instead.

Re: Harmonic balancer confusion

Just saw one of those myself a while ago. I'm thinking about picking one up just to have on hand. I've kinda been getting into a little auto repair for other people here lately.

Re: Harmonic balancer confusion

Actually, that looks like an incredibly bad design to me. If the outer ring slips a little, it will throw the engine out of balance.

I thought the "weighted" part was always inboard of the elastomer. That way if the outer ring slips, the timing marks may be off but the the engine will still run properly.

I could be wrong, but I would not buy that piece.

Re: Harmonic balancer confusion

Well blame Ford for that. It is exactly like the OEM balancer. My Ford Racing balancer is set up like you say, it cost considerably more than that one, though.

Re: Harmonic balancer confusion

Oh, yeah, you're right. It is just like the stock Ford balancer.

I guess the design can't be too bad if it has been installed on about fifty gazillion engines over the years.
