Re: Trouble adjusting valves on 302
HI
I realy perfer the EOIC medithod
Just as the exhaust valve starts to open adjust the intake valve of that cylinder.
Then just as the intake valve closes adjust the exhaust valve of tha cylinder.
don't worry about the TDC thing.
just be sure that all the up and down play of the push rod is out then go the extra 3/4 turn. don't spin the push rod work it up and down.
good luck
Tim

Or you could follow my detailed still life photo and call it done.

Re: Trouble adjusting valves on 302
After I adjust one valve, and I stand back and look at it, I notice that The nut is not very far down on the stud. Then after 90 and then 180 and so on,when I get back to that first one it is really loose. These are new lifters & this engine has not been ran.
Before I installed the lifters (almost a year ago now) I soaked them in a can of oil overnight.
Could it be they are leaking down between revolutions?
Do you think I should let them bleed down a couple of minutes before I adjust? I have never had this problem before. Am I right to assume that since the valves are opening at the right time (in association to the piston) that the cam is correct?
Thanks,Lance

LOL... your detailed still life photo is kind of off.. it show's the lifter on the high point (lift) of the lobe and for adjusting the lash you want it on the base circle.
but that picture IS clear as mud. lol..

You need to go two revolutions to get back to TDC for the first one.

WHAT THE HECK???
Are you using 7/16" nuts on a 3/8" thread????
There is NOTHING other than stripped threads or studs pulling out of the block that will cause that nut to back off and be sloppy after 180* revolution unless you are doing it on TOP of eh cam lobe ad not on the BOTTOM of the cam lobe...

Re: Trouble adjusting valves on 302
DO you know that your Exhaust valve lines up with the EXHAUST PORT in the head?
And the Intake Valve lines up with the Intake runner coming off the intake manifold...
Are you doing it backwards?
When the Exhaust valve (the part under the SPRING side of the rocker arm ) starts to go DOWNWARD, you can turn your motor another couple inches, then adjust the INTAKE VALVE... And so on and so forth...
Then when the Intake Valve starts to go Down, turn the engine a few inches further then adjust the Exhaust Valve.
