Wiring electric choke with Delco alternator?

I have read many posts about wiring the choke wire to the stator terminal on the alternator. How would this work with a Delco 12 SI alternator? Is it possible? If it is possible I will run mine this way. If the stator wire does not put out enough voltage I can use it to trigger a relay.

Re: Wiring electric choke with Delco alternator?

I have a 12SI. Back when I used to run a choke I just connected it to switched 12v. It won't cause a problem as long as your car starts up in a reasonable time. Otherwise you may have to let the element cool down for a minute before trying to restart. I don't even bother with a choke anymore, in fact I removed the choke horn from my 650dp. Starts right up, runs smooth after about a minute even in below freezing temps.

Using the alt was only for convenience rather than necessity.

You should just find a key on 12V hot source and be done with it.

Re: Wiring electric choke with Delco alternator?

Yep, the reaason for the electric choke being connected to the alternator was that the choke wouldn't start coming off until the engine actually started running and causing voltage to appear at the stator terminal. When the choke is connected to switched 12v it starts getting voltage as soon as the key is turned on. If your car doesn't start quick enough you've got other issues (tuneup needed?).

Re: Wiring electric choke with Delco alternator?

I figured it wouldn't be that simple. Ignition hot wires are limited under the hood on my 62. I suppose I will figure it out when I run the wire to power the Duraspark box. I suppose I could tee off of that one and use a relay.

Re: Wiring electric choke with Delco alternator?

If your car does not start soon enough to keep the Choke from opening with the key being in the on or crank position for a few seconds then something it WRONG with your car.

Simple as that. that choke 12V source can reliably come from any keyed source and be effective.

Re: Wiring electric choke with Delco alternator?

I won't know how well it starts until next year. I am mocking up the wiring right now. I was wanting to integrate the choke circuit into the engine harness as much as possible.
