Looking for info on a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 xl
Hello everyone.
I'm looking for information on a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 xl.
This was my Father-in-law's car and I don't know anything about Fords.
I am wondering how to go about finding the motor size and transmission type for this particular car.
If anyone has any info on Vin Codes or Serial # I would really appreciate the assistance.
Vehicle VIV# 0000004U65X156286
His wife wants to put it up for sale and I have no idea what it may be worth.
I have a few pictures uploaded at:

I personally don't know how much it is worth, but $7500 (listed on your website) seems like a screaming deal!

Based on the pictures, it looks like the 352 cu inch, 2 barrel carb, for 63 Ford rated them at 220 horsepower, not sure for 64. Transmission looks to be the standard Cruise-o-matic. Nice car, is it all original?

Re: Looking for info on a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 xl
Just going off of your vin that you gave, you have the "X" code engine which is a 352 4 barrell (250hp). The vin # breaks down as follows for your number.
4= model year (1964)
U= assembly plant (Louisville)
65= series code (don't know, galaxie 500 2dr ht maybe?)
X= engine code (352 4v)
156286= consecutive unit number (56,286th galaxie made I think)
If you open the driver door there should be a tag on the back side of the door that will also list codes for body, color, trim, build date, dso (distric sales office), axle, and trans. If you get me all these codes I should be able to look them all up in my books.
Just in case you don't know, your car isn't a 500XL. It is just the galaxie 500. The XL was an optional trim package that included front bucket seats, center console with shifter and XL badging on the front fenders, rear quarters, rear valance, glove box, steering wheel and also on the hubcaps.
It is a sharp looking car that you have there. You may also want to post this question in the galaxie pages for those galaxie lovers that only visit that page.
Hope this helps you out a little.

Thank you all so much for your help!
Thank you r.n.r.racing....
I will take a look at the drivers door to see if the tag is still in place and post whatever I find there in the forum here as soon as I can.
Again thank you all for your help!

Thanks for the help! I wasn't sure if it was an 500XL or not. I was confused because there is a galaxie XL emblem on the bumper and it looks like an original emblem.

Re: Looking for info on a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 xl
Looks like somewbody had a dented molding and decided to replace it with whatever was available.
If it's in good shape, and you don't intend to "clone" the car into an XL, why not swap it with a member that needs a 500 XL molding and has a regular molding to replace yours?
Win, win situation.
