T5 Conversion "Help"

T5 Conversion "Help"

Just completed installation of the T5 conversion into 66 V8 mustang. The clutch cable conversion kit + T5 bell housing, fork, flywheel, clutch plate etc. are from a 1985 V8 mustang.

The clutch appears to work properly in that when the clutch is depressed and with it shifted into any gear (including reverse) the car does not move until the clutch is released (1.5") and that is seems as it should be; but here is the problem.

The only way to shift it into any gear (without grinding the gears) is with the engine "Off". Depressing the clutch all the way with the engine idling results in a high speed grinding of the gears regardless of what gear is chosen? (The clutch seems to be adjusted correctly).

What could be wrong ?

Thank you for any helpful suggestions !

Did the input shaft go smoothly into the pilot bearing?..Sounds like something is making the input shaft turn.If its not the clutch dragging it must be something binding on the input shaft..Can you get anymore adjustment on the clutch just to try it?

Re: T5 Conversion "Help"

I had a problem with my diaphram type clutch in the 66 Fastback. However, this may not apply in your case since I was using the stock Z-bar setup. My car acted similar to a pilot bearing going up in that the input shaft seemed to be spinning with the clutch depressed; making it hard to go into gear. I found out that the clutch fingers were being depressed too far and were contacting the the rear of the clutch disc. Either the contact between the fingers and the disc itself kept the input shaft turning; or there was enough depression to cause the disc to rub against the flywheel with the same result. When I tore it down, I could see evidence of the "rubbing" between the diaphram finger tips and the rear of the clutch disc. I adjusted the clutch linkage so that it wouldn't push the throwout bearing so far forward.
