couple engine building questions

it doesnt look like the lifter bores were messed with. When I pulled the stuck lifters out I had ALOT of trouble. I had to beat them out from the bottom. Should I do anything to those bores? Or should I test fit a lifter first as Im going from hydro to solid.

Sometimes as lifters wear out the bottoms will flare making it hard to remove.
Definitely check the bores for damage - CLOSELY. If the bores are not scored then they should be fine.

Re: couple engine building questions

ok thanks!

Next
should I polish the main and rods bearings to remove the coating on them to aid in start up?

Should I check crankshaft thrust? if it is to tight how do I loosen it?

When installing the pistons should I coat the bores with my royal purple break in oil or use something else?

thanks

Test fit your new lifters before doing anything to the lifter bores. The only think you may need to do is a little scotch-brite and some finger power with carb cleaner to thinner.

DO NOT hone them with a cylinder hone!

Re: couple engine building questions

Concerning polishing the bearings: Depends on the bearings you have. Federal-Mogul race bearings dropped the cosmetic tin plate several years ago, and the other companies have followed. Tin is a protection layer for storage and a break-in surface. But the tin plate tends to migrate under load, causing high spots and material thickness variation. It can also be forced into the over-plate alloy under pressure, weakening the alloy mix. If you have tin plated and feel need to detail the surface you're better off with some coarse paper. like a brown shopping bag and a bit of WD40.

i was going to use 30weight oil on the bores and the royal purple assmb lube I got for the bearing surfaces. bad idea on the royal purple? I got it for free so I might as well use the 30 dollar bottle lol

Re: couple engine building questions

Trashline, I like to use 2-stroke racing oil the premix stuff in the cylinder bores during assembly, it burns off fast and doesnt leave gunk all over your pistons. Definately check crank thrust! I prefer to use a dial indicator with a magnetic stand but you can use a set of feeler gauges too. Get yourself a book.
