c6 trans question

What are the ears on each side of a c6 trans good for? If I remove those ears will this cause any problems? I'm trying to install a chassis engineering firewall into my car but the ears on the transmission make it to wide to fit in the raduised cutout for the trans tunnel. I believe if I remove the ears I would have enough clearance.

I shaved mine off to make some extra room. hasnt seemed to affect anything...

Just there to facilitate machining of the raw casting.
