torque converters???

I don't know a whole lot about torque converters....is there any reason I shouldn't consider buying a used one if I came across one??
Also, can anyone recommend a good stall range for me?? not sure what factors come into play so here are my specs:
9.0:1 289
windsor jr. heads
comp cams 270s: 224 degrees duration, .499" lift
weiand stealth intake/600 vacuum secondary holley
1.5" primary shorty headers

stock '66 c4 with cheetah manual/automatic valve body

2.8:1 8" rear

It's a street driven car...i'm just looking for better low-end response.

sorry the post is so long...but i'm definitely a beginner when it comes to transmissions

torque converters???

I'd say no more than a 2400 - like an 11" TCI Break-a-way or something similar. Your gear is way low for much more even though that cam timing would probably like a 2800~3000.

Converters respond to torque. The more torque the engine makes, the better the converter reacts. Stall speeds are just generalities. A converter that stalled at 2200 behind your engine might act like a 2800 behind a mild 351. The best way to pick is to talk to a few of the converter companies and give them all your specs. They can then make an informed recommendation.
