Who makes good, best?...assymbly manual

I have avoided trans work, but it's about time - I want to get my hands dirty. Got any links to where to buy technical manuals and recommendation of titles? I just want to get through a rebuild one or two sucessfully at first...later, I want to give a try at setting one up for performance.

I figure I'll start out reading these over and over at first then "ruin" a few before swapping one into my car.

I have the Haynes "How to Rebuild Ford Automatic Transmissions" manual. Here's a link: http://www.haynes.com/na201.html#anchor1054803

It seems to be fairly complete for the basic stock rebuild, and it covers the C3, C4/5, C6 and AOD transmissions. Don't know if there are any specific books geared toward performance rebuilders.

By the way, I found the C4 auto easier to rebuild than a T5 5 speed. It's really not that difficult.

Beoweolf, I have the Haynes manual, and it is ok, but I believe in covering all my bases. I suggest starting out with an ATSG manual, great tear down but sketchy on the build up, then look for a factory Ford trans overhaul manual. For more info I like the Mitchell transmission manuals, the Motor brand manuals look to be a copy of the Ford manual. I have not found an aftermarket book on how to improve the C4, I guess they are pretty good stock.
Ebay has been a great source for manuals of all kinds, just remember "caveat emptor". C4's are easy to rebuild, you will need some special tools and room to work. Good luck
