C-4 locking up in third gear

I recently rebuilt a c4 and installed a maual valve body. I runs and shifts well with the exception of locking up in third gear when the gas pedal is released. When the throttle is again applied, it unlocks and acts normally. Like everyone else that has tinkered with something, we all thought we did a good job. Well, I goofed somewhere and need some direction of where to look for the problem.:bicker

Not following you when you are saying locking up and unloacking. Are you saying the car/transmission acts like it disengages when you release the gas and coast? Or does it lock up the rear tires and skid them?

When you let off the gas pedal in third gear, the rear end locks up and skids. The car does not skid or lock up in first or second gear. Apply the gas again and the car continues to drive as normal not skidding but moving the car in a forward direction (in third gear).

Is this a full manual VB from a company or one you made using like a TransGo kit? By chance did you swap in a late model VB into an early model case? Did you take apart the VB before installing it?

If the VB was sold to you by a company, have you tried calling their tech line?

I have never ran into something like this. Just from the way it sounds, you are going into two gears at once and could be a VB problem.

How was your clutch pack clearances? On the tight side? What about internal play between the front pump and the rear of the case? Tight? Loose? What about end play as measured on the input shaft?

I methodically disassembled/reassembled the VB and installed a kit from Transgo. The VB is the same year as the trans.
As far as clearances, they were all checked (several times) and found to be in the middle of factory specs. Passages were pressure checked and found to be in spec and operable. It was a running trans with many miles prior to the rebuild. Someone said it may be too tight of clearances in the high gear clutch pack. If clearances were right, how could that be? I've considered replacing the VB with another for comparison.

A couple of years ago my brothers car was having the same problem but he could tell that the tranny was dragging in 2nd and high when under power. There was cross leaks in the valve body and the low-reverse band was always applied.
Try another valve body that has gaskets in it.
I use gaskets in my full manual valve body, it really helped seal things better and the tranny worked better.

I'm going to try another valvebody. Although, it is a proven B&M kitted v/b, it will eliminate questionable parts.
