Soft Shift to second and third

fresh rebuild, blue clutches, kolene steels, kevlar bands, transgo 40-3 full manual kit, modulator in, but not hooked up, H servo

when it shifts from second it feels a little soft.

is this band adjustment issues?

Thanks
Brad
ps

transmission was airchecked, and valve body put on a machine and checked before it was installed

do you know the clearances on the high-reverse?

It is possible it is the intermediate band adjustment, but more likely the high-reverse clearance.

Are you using a high stall convertor? The convertors can cushion the shifts at light throttle and make the shifts feel soft..It should shift harder though up in the revs.

yes using a h igh stall converter, took to track labor day, it ran good, but its like you could never feel it shift, first to second or second to third

just an instant change from 1 to 2 and from 2 to 3, with no slip what so ever, but no hard thump when it changed gears

high stalls slip, that is what gets you the high stall. The side-effect is soften shifts. The shifts may be firm, but since the converter is not as tightly locked with the engine, it does not pull the engine down in revs as instantaneously, or completely for that matter.

I thought you were having problems with *only* the 2-3. But if you just put in a high-stall and your getting soft shifts from 1-2 and 2-3, then that is normal. Surprised the heck outta me the first time I put in a high-stall.

Just listening to an automatic door slammer set up similar to your at the track sounds like soft shifts down the track, but the car moves smoothly. No jerkiness under full throttle.

That's how C4's shift. They don't jerk or bang like those GM trannies do (my 'glide will hurt you if you aint' ready for it-but it's hard on the drivetrain). Every C4 I've ever had was like you describe. A quick shift is better than a delayed hard shift anyday.
