Torque converter and oil pump stator

What in the torque converter would cause this?

This was the first pump before rebuild.

Torque converter and oil pump stator

The stock convertor I cut open doesn't seem to have anything that would do that. The sprag slides onto the splines and I doubt a thrust washer would do that, unless of course the tangs sheared off. Was the convertor coming apart internally???
Maybe that or if you have an upgraded convertor, a torrington washer could do that. GregAust wrote me about a Powerglide that had the pump stator cut off by a rogue Torrington washer.

The torque converter looks fine. I have no idea what could have caused this. I am not using that pump for the rebuild but would like to reuse the torque converter. The converter is fairly new and has only been in the Trans for about a week worth of normal operation. The Sprag had no sign of damage at all. This is an aftermarket Converter; would I be able to see the Torrington washer with out disassembly? Hey I appreciate your input. Thanks!

No you can't see the thrusts, all you can see is the inside splines of the sprag and the small splines of the hub that engages the input shaft. There are thrusts on each side of the hub that engages the input shaft, but the sprag prevents them from being visible.
Where the gouge is seems to be rearward of the sprag and the thrusts are forward of it.
Got me stumped. Maybe someone more knowledgeable will weigh in. Sorry.

This pump I took out of the rebuild tranny and it is even more worn than the first pump. The culprite has to be the torque converter, which was from TCI. Does anyone know whats causing this inside the torque converter.

That's right, both pumps used the same convertor. The only reason I used it the second time around was 1 it was new I had just bought it and had it installed for a short time before completely rebuilding the tranny and 2 I though maybe a bad bushing or something on the old pump caused it. No one could tell me what was causing it before either.

I am just mad because It looks like this was a defect from the manufacter and it's been like 2yrs and I have only put maybe a 1000 mile on this convertor.

I'd junk that converter. That ain't supposed to happen. I've seen some B&M converters that wobbled badly. TCI probably isn't much better.

JPT is outstanding. Coan is great. Eage is good also. There are others.
Stay away from TCI, B&M, GER.
