C4 slow to or wont\'s shift into forward gears
I'm a newbie with transmissions, so forgive what will be silly questions to many of you.
History: rebuilt a '67 C4 with shift kit for my '63 Falcon, swapped it in, was ok for a few days after install, then...
symptoms: slipping a bit (got worse), slow to engage into forward gears (got much worse), binding a bit in reverse and neutral. The car is very slow to get into forward gears and yesterday, it wouldn't shift in at all. It shifts into R fine.
last night I pulled the front accumulator to make sure I had a good seal as I thought I was leaking fluid pressure there keeping it from shifting into forward gears. I also pulled the pan to reseal it. Seems to have stopped all the leaks except for at the dipstick tube entry.
Questions:
1. the front band and accumulator are for forward gears (2-3) and the rear band are for R and 1st, right? I see lots of mention of an intermediate band. Is that for a C4?
2. with it binding in reverse (moving but like I have my foot on the brake off and on), does that mean the FRONT band could be too tight? I tried to reset the bands according to the rebuild kit instructions and tech support suggestions. Then, I loosened the front band an additional 1/4 turn and it seemed to help the reverse binding a bit. Did 1/4 more but didn't seem to change after that.
3. what are the possibilities for a tranny that engages in R fine but is very slow to engage in forward gears (1st in manual 1st and D, 2, & 3) noting that it's a fresh rebuild and rebuilt torque converter?
4. I know I have a new intake vac leak. I get about 10in in gear. Would low vac to the modulator valve keep the car from shifting into forward gears? I can't pull the intake until next weekend and I need to get her back on the road if possible. Would one of those vaccum coffee cans help?
5. would adjusting the modulator scrwe out more help to lower the required vac to shift it into gear?
THanks all for your help. I really need to try to get her back rolling today if possible.
