C4 Puking and Slowing in 2nd

Hello all. I recently rebuilt my C-4 following the haynes ford transmission manual step by step. I put a B&M transpack kit in it. Everything seemed fine. Got my 302 running recently and took it for a spin. 1st gear and reverse it runs great. Once I hit second it starts puking smoke out the breather hole (I can see it through the big hole in my floor) and it actually seems as though as I give it more power the slower I go. I can really hear the engine strugling as the tranny forces it to slow down.

Any ideas what to check?

Maybe you've got two gears fighting each other - bands not releasing, rev/high clutch too tight, valve body not assembled correctly or warped from overtorquing, etc.

Power flow:
1st - low/rev band applied, Forward clutch applied
2nd - low/rev releases, interm. band applied, forward clutch applied
3rd - interm. band releases, rev/high clutch applied, forward clutch applied

leaky valve body...causes the low/rev band to partially apply while the int. band & forward clutch are applied. This causes it to partially lock...at one time I lost control of my Maverick on the drag strip because of this. didn't hurt anything buy my pride and toasted the transmission...but a good valvebody and another rebuild fixed it. I still use that transmission in my Mustang. That was over 7 years ago.

I guess it's time to overhaul that thing. Naaa...hell...It still works.

I was thinking the same thing about mine - almost 10 years and a billion passes. Still flares on the 2-3 in the pits, never on the strip - go figure.
