There are all kinds of trick fluids you could use. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Type F has more friction making it shift tighter and less wear with wet clutches. Some racers use Mobil 1 5w20 and I used it and liked it. Now I'm trying John Deere low viscosity HyGaurd tractor oil, which I learned of from racers as well. It is a hydraulic and wet clutch fluid and not as expensive as Mobil 1. They have enough grip to lower your stall speed a few rpm and can handle the heat of trans brakes. They are both hard to read on the dipstick and some put a quart of type F in to add color. The JD is $10 - $15 a gallon.
I think this is the link I was looking for.

B&M Trick shift is type F with dye and an additive.
Use type F fluid and you can't go wrong.
Yes there is a difference. Type F is a higher temp limited slip fluid and it is the BEST thing you can use in your Ford transmission.
Racers use inexpensive oils because they change it after every run - if you want to change your oil after each quarter mile then do what the racers do. If you want to drive your car on the road and change oil every 20000 miles or two years then run type F ATF and let it be.
Tractor oil... Yep it is cheap. You can get it in 5,10 20, 30 and 40 weight. It is made for commercial transmissions - not your car. That's why it is not on the list of recommended oils.
Your ATF hast to lubricate the bushings and thrust washers, cool all the parts, allow clutches to lock up FAST and get out of the way of those plates as they lock up. It has to be able to transfer the heat in the cooler and come back into the tranny ready to do it all again. Dextron will burn brown in less than a week in a stock Ford tranny. Engine oil will cause slipage in your tranny - that you can't feel until it is too late and it isn't as good at cooling the tranny or transfering the heat to the cooler. JDTO is great in the industrial transmissions that are made for it but at the temps that your transmission runs on the street it will burn and lose any lubrication that it started with while thickening to shellac ruining not only your plates and bands but also darkening the inside of your case which will further limit the cooling that is done through the aluminum case. If it met the needs of your tranny it would be listed for use. Get the applications book and look at the operating temperature ranges for the different oils - nothing will beat type F.

Paul, Did you read the link? Tractor fluid performs the same tasks as tranny fluid only at higher temps and pressures. I'm no expert but I will use it until it proves me wrong.

ok well i bought valvoline type FA, the guy at at the parts store told it is the same but a new and improved formula. i run all vavloline lubricants just like them and i am a firm believer in one oil and not change types everytime and that is what i have always run in it. so is this the right stuff? i could only find true type f in a cheap no name brand.

I run Dextron III , As i can find it easy. Type F is hard to find somethimes.
Type F does not have any friction modifiers as i recall. Dextron does.
So would think for racing type f would be better.
I never have had any issues with the Dextron III.
The type FA should be fine and as you said just don;t mix stuff and you should be ok.

I know this is an old post, but I had to get some type f the other day. Carquest has it but my local NAPA told me it has been superseded by Dexron III. I am thinking bout stocking up on the type F as the dex makes me leery, as my father has told me never to put Dex in Ford

I've been using dexron 3 for many years and no issues at all ..
When you go buy parts for rebuilds all the clutches/friction materials are the same across Ford and GM transmissions anyway
Also used Dexron 2 in my daily driver for last 100 000 Kms and serviced last weekend , oil was like new,nil residue in pan .
Have been involved in fleet vehicles also that have allison transmissions and they were swapped from Dex 3 to 15/40 diesel engine oil for a few reasons. They actually worked better with the engine oil

I have Amsoil ATF in my c-4 works good. If I didn't run Amsoil I'd run Type F.
