No forward gears but rewerse works fine.

just a second after I shifted to 2,nd gear all forward gears was gone. It is a JW C4 transmission with manuel valvebody. driven by a 460" in my Galaxie.
Any ideas of what happened. I have taken it apart and can't see anything broken, clutches look new.
Can it be the converter?
Please help me out.
Best regards
Jens

Re: No forward gears but rewerse works fine.

First thing that comes to mind is the Forward Clutches failed. May have lost the piston seal, then smoked the clutches. Sound like it is time to pull it apart.

The piston inside the forward drum.

Re: No forward gears but rewerse works fine.

It sounds related to the forward drum. Either the piston or the bellville spring could have failed.

Re: No forward gears but rewerse works fine.

The forward clutch pack is not applying. Look at the sealing rings on the stator support, the belleville spring and the apply piston seal on the forward clutch. (inner and outer).
If you don't find any problems there then look at the valve body.
Beyond that it may be broken sun gear or planetaries. As a last result look for a cracked case - I have seen a couple that broke from too much force applied by the intermediate servo. It usually happens with a large servo that has been modified and high pressure working it. Like a manual shift valve body.
Let us know what you find.

Re: No forward gears but rewerse works fine.

It was the forward clutch hub that is broken.
Can I get one stronger than this one?

Re: No forward gears but rewerse works fine.

Ah ok.. Used to be a company here in Australia years ago made a steel one of those ..Not sure what ever happened to them. That is a fairly uncommon break IMO so a used one would work ok. One article i have says one from an F truck is stronger but i've never confirmed that .
