Don't know anything about codes, but to the best of my knowledge you either have a cast iron cruisomatic or a C4 in your car.

Crawl underneath your car. The cruiso pan is wider than long. The C4 longer than wide. Cruiso has castiron case. C4 aluminum. Both have detachable aluminum bells and tails.

Dipstick on cruiso goes into pan - on C4 into case next to bell. C4 has two external servos - cruiso servos are internal.

Depending on application both can be good transmissions.

Let me answer this one again.

The EDSEL (1958) (the 361 CI FE was used in the FORD based models- the 410 CI MEL was used in the MERC based models) used the older design Single-Range transmission (as evidenced by the shift positions on the Tele-Touch).

1958 saw a further development in the FOM series by going to Dual Range. This was not carried over to the EDSEL (it was planned). So it is possible that the trans may be a MERC-O-MATIC (makes more sense due to needed strength).

I do not have the MPC for the EDSEL (or any car line of that period) so I cannot give a definitive answer to your question. But the trans used would have been either a small case FOM or a mid case MERC-O-MATIC.
