AOD to C 4 starter trouble

I switched from a AOD to a C-4 last year and have great luck with this conversion, except for the starter. Im using the 89 5.0 flywheel and starter. It sounds like crap, and looks like its just barely catching the tips of the flywheel teeth. I was hoping to hear from someone who had made the switch to see how they solved the problem. Thanks, Dan

Re: AOD to C 4 starter trouble

You have the wrong flex plate (flywheel). You need a 164 tooth flywheel and you are using the 157 tooth unit. That will correct your engagement problem.

Now I feel like a idiot, I knew there were 2 flywheels, I have always assumed that the 5.0 liter AOD used the 164, never bothered to actually check. Thanks for the help, Dan

Re: AOD to C 4 starter trouble

Just being curious here. I thought all AOD transmissions used the 164 tooth flexplate? I have never heard of them using a 157 tooth. Anybody sure on this??

Re: AOD to C 4 starter trouble

Ok, after ordering a new 164 tooth flywheel from summit today and then pulling the c-4 and counting the teeth,I found 164. any other ideas? I have ordered a starter drive from a late 70's truck with a small block c-4. It carries a different number than the aod one, maybe different size? The bellhousing # is D6TP 7976 AA . The cross reference lists it as a 164 tooth housing. It is a pan fill from a mid 70's LTD. Im open to any ideas. Thanks, Dan
