What sealer do you guys recommend?

So, the last time I had my tranny out, when I put the new gaskets in, I used Fel-Pro brushable tacky sealer. Sorta like Gasgacinch, I think. You brush it on, it gets tacky and then you assemble.

Well, now it's leaking, especially from where the tailhousing meets the main body.

So, I'm going to have to pull it apart again, what do you guys recommend that I seal it up with so it doesn't leak?

Thanks!

A very light coat of JV-8 on both sides of the gasket... available form the Fellpro guy's I believe... Napa's carry it.
It's simply the best sealant I've ever used, and it's sensor safe... Not that that matters

Most C4's assembled with dry gaskets and proper torques do not leak. Unless you have a damaged or warped sealing surface it should be fine with a fresh gasket and clean surfaces.

Yes i agree, all assembled dry , though i have been using a little sealer on the extension to case gasket for a while now as some seem to sweat a little there when sitting..
I use a little, very thin wipe, loctite ultra blue sealer on both sides of the gasket

Re: What sealer do you guys recommend?

Yeah, that's reasonable. I generally avoid sealers as they hinder progress on the next teardown. On my trannies, I block all the gasket surfaces, using flat stones on the case (servo and case bottom/end) and an 18x18x3/4" granite slab (floor tile on $3 clearance) with sandpaper taped to it for the tailhousing. A few small figure-8's on that puppy and any distortions are immediately apparent and corrected. I figure it takes just a bit longer (if any longer) than wiping on sealer, but saves me time in the long run, not having to clean it up again the next time in and no leaks to fix in the meantime. I guess I'm a bit anal about blueprinting - deburring every edge, removing casting flash, chasing all the threads, truing surfaces, stuff like that. Old habits die hard... but I like my old habits.

Re: What sealer do you guys recommend?

On the same subject I figured I'd throw these pics up for fun. The bare case has been painted and prepped, and you can see the trued gasket surfaces and no paint on the other mounting and mating surfaces. The lighting is bad, but the corners, edges and valve body passages are deburred, giving a slight reflection:

Detail? You should see the inside... Another project tranny awaiting install behind a twin turbo V6 streeter:

And just for giggles - I'm sure some of you recognize this little gem. Just picked it up yesterday for a future behind an E85 fueled 700hp crate-motored street rod. I'm also doing the custom fuel injection on this project, but tuning the upper power levels might be a bit scary on MT street tires, LOL:

Looks good PSI.. I'm very particular also on finish.. I never paint gasket surfaces either . Yours looks very similar to mine. I used to use VHT aluminium silver but lately use the VHT satin black.. Maybe since been quiet here lately i'll start a post on different finishes we all do .

Cleaned up 30 year old factory finish for me.
Race car stuff, has been yanked in and out if a hurry a few times.
Thought is the bare aluminum throws heat a little better than paint also.

Re: What sealer do you guys recommend?

Thanks to everyone for chipping in! I'm not sure *why* mine is leaking then. Does anyone think Type-F is more prone to leakage than other fluids? Could that be it?

Thanks!

Don't think type F is any different.. Just seem to sweat in that area for some reason??
