24 vs 26 spline

Gents, currently I have an early c4 24 spline which I am considering reco'ing to heavy duty/ hi-performance specs. I plan to install a blower soon after which will bump the power output to about 400 odd hp. If I'm not drag racing etc and drive sanely will the 24 spline handle the hp or is a 26 spline recommended. The sticky says a 26 can handle 600hp hp so I'm hoping the 24 can handle 400. Thanks. Peter

Re: 24 vs 26 spline

No burn outs, no wheel hopping green light take offs.
No power shifting.

It should hold. But if you are going to go through the tranny why not just upgrade it to 26 spline?

Shoot, now that you've bought that up I may have to go 26.
It's always been one of the options but because of the extra $$, finding a suitable core and new stall etc, I've always ummed and arred.
ATTN GREGAUST, if you're reading this , does a c4 from an XD/E have a 26 spline shaft? Cheers Peter.

Re: 24 vs 26 spline

The 24 spline early C4 will be just fine for your application. The no burnouts or racing is a bunch of BS. All 3 of my "hobby cars" have 24 spline C4's and get raced on a regular basis with no problems being 24 spline.

XD will be 26 spline.
To check the diameter of the shafts , late type is .839" early one is .788".

Re: 24 vs 26 spline

Well i only build 26 splines now mostly. Particularly if you are looking to make power. It is easier to get converters also. My converter guy did one high stall 24 spline converter a few years ago and won't do another . Required a special inner hub.drive to be made up .The later ones have a better valvebody too in my opinion but valvebodies won't interchange.

So if you're in Australia ?? it's easy enough to get any 1970 onwards C4.

Re: 24 vs 26 spline

So if i go to the wreckers , what should I ask for ? A late model c4 or a c4 from an 80's Falcon? Just worried that the counter salesperson might try to flog a pre 70. Or is it easier to ask the transmission rebuilder to get a core?
