C-4 torque converter to flexplate clearance PLEASE HELP

Im having some transmission issues with my car and was wondering you if you could help here is what i have .
Mustang 302 with a c-4 ptc converter
When i use my 5 7/8 bellhousing i hang the trans on the dowels and im hitting the flexplate with converter . the engine i bought has JW "the wheel" ( i belive ) flexplate . It was powered by a Powerglide , It had holes for the c-4 so i used them (157 tooth , 10.5 bolt pattern) I bought another bellhousing 6 1/4 on jegs and said it would accept either 164 or 157 , great i put it in shimmed the converter with one washer , everything was going great till i tried to turn it over and the starter is a 1/2 in away from the flex plate ( i gues this is considered a big bell ) Im at this point and im trying to figure out where im going wrong , I see you guys sell a bellhousing , what is legnth of it . I have the converter All the way in by checking this i put grease on the hub and see that the grease is getting smeared on the two tabs where it goes into the front trans pump. If you can guide me in any direction it would be greatly appericated , I see that ur bellhousing says it was mutiple holes for the starter. let me know Thanks in advance

Re: C-4 torque converter to flexplate clearance PLEASE HELP

There are two clearances that are important. Torque converter hub in the crank pilot hole and torque converter to transmission pump. Too tight and you have stress the thrush washer for the engine crank or the seal in the transmission pump.

My experience. An eagle forged crank with a TCI flexplate, TCI torque converter, and a TCI Streefighter C4. My first issue was the the flexplate bottomed out in the crank pilot hole before engaging the flexplate. NEVER PULL THE TORQUE CONVERTER TIGHT TO THE FLEXPLATE USING THE MOUNTING BOLTS. The solution was that TCI cut 70 thousands off the converter hub.

Second issue using the 5 7/8 bellhousing was that there was not enough clearance between torque converter and flexplate with the transmission bolted up to the engine. Solution was to use two motor plates. THE TORQUE CONVERTER MUST MOVE BACK AND FORTH A SMALL AMOUNT WITH EVERYTHING BOLTED UP. NO CLEARANCED BETWEEN THE FLEXPLATE AND TORQUE CONVERTER WILL DESTROY THE SEAL IN THE TRANSMISSON PUMP.

I hope this helps.
