Re: Confused on 66 Cruise-o-matic, is it a C-4?
The 66 & earlier C-4's had a different valve body than the 67-69 mustangs.
Your trans has the green dot on the shifter quadrant. If you put the linkage on the green dot it will start out in low & then shift into intermediant & then into high.
If you put the trans in ???D-2 it starts out in low then shifts into 2nd.
You need to check the owners manual because this valve body is a bastard type configuration.
I am not sure, but i believe you can put a 67-69 valve body in your trans & it will update it to later & better shift paterns.
On my 67 mustang which has a transgo shift kit, i can manually start out in low & rev the engine to my shift point then manually shift to 2nd & then into 3rd.
If i start out in drive the governor controls the full throttle shift points.
I use a special light spring in the secondary piston of the governor so my full throttle upshifts in drive occur at 5500 rpms.
I sell this spring for $15.00.
Several members of this forum have used this spring with positive results. Bill

Re: Confused on 66 Cruise-o-matic, is it a C-4?
WSA111 - yes, it's a "Green Dot" cruise-o-matic. The first drive position after neutral starts off in 2nd and goes to 3rd. The next position is Green Dot, starts off in 1st, then to 2nd, then to 3rd. Last position furthest to right is Low, starts in Low and stays in low. I've seen FX, MX, FMX, C4 and am just confused on if I have ANY of those? Thanks for all the help!

In the first D position it starts in 2nd, then into 3rd.
The green dot position has all 3 gears.

You have a C4.
Any C4 will bolt in and look fo one from a car with a 250 six or bigger engine - they are all alike. (from a bolt-in point of view)

I fail to see why it has taken this many posts for you to figure out what you have.
If you had gone to the link I posted in the third post on this thread you would have long ago figured out that you have C4. Obviously you want us to tell you what you have without you doing any of the work yourself except when pushed to do it by other posters.

Re: Confused on 66 Cruise-o-matic, is it a C-4?
Well MMERLINN, I'm sorry if I offended you by responding to posts and asking questions, which is what I thought this site was for. So are you saying that none of the other posters and contributors had no other good info except you and your original post with the link? The fact that another contributor said I have a different valve body in my C4 than those from 67-69 Mustangs? That type of info isn't helpful to me, that what you are saying? I fail to see how asking several questions on the topic is laziness on my part or hurtful to the site???? Have you ever heard of the saying "measure twice and cut once?" All I'm trying to do is figure out what to look for in finding a replacement tranny for mine, and the more information I have the better to head off any problems I may encounter beforehand. I'm actually going to ask another question on C4's (oh boy!) and I sure hope that doesn't offend you or point out how lazy I am, sorry.

I'm not mmerlin but would like to add my 2 cents worth.
Yes this forum is for asking questions but without knowing if the transmission is stock or a replacement a bit of work on your part sure would help.
Since no C6 was bolted to a 289 that leaves either C4 or some form of MX and you determined the case is aluminum you end up with a C4.
Some people are giving you information about various valve bodies etc.
Oh well, you'll probably blow this off anyway.
Rossa Ruck.
