Confused on 66 Cruise-o-matic, is it a C-4?
OK experts, help out a confused owner of a 66 Galaxie with original 289 and the "cruise-o-matic" transmission. Is this Cruise-o-matic 3-speed tranny a C4, a C4 version, or not? Can I swap in a later-model C4 in it's place? It's starting to slip and leak, and am trying to figure out my options: just have the cruise-o-matic rebuilt, or should I/can I swap it out with a C4 that there seem to be plenty of rebuilt ones lying around for sale? Can someone straighten me out on what my options are? And whether the cruise-o-matic is really a C4 or not? Going to keep the 289 small block in it. Thanks you PROs!

if the case is cast iron, then it is a B-W style FMX/cruise-o-matic

you should have a fx--
i think fmx didn't come out until 68 --not sure -but i seem to remember reading it
remember there was the fx- mx- fmx- hx-- c4- c5 -c6 -different input shafts- different tail housings--different shift patterns-

C-4 came before the FMX and about the same time as the MX which is right before the C-6 and was just another version of the Cast Iron Cruise O Matic medium block, right?
That's the way I always thought anyway...

Re: Confused on 66 Cruise-o-matic, is it a C-4?
OK, sorry for the earlier lack of info on the 66 Galaxie Cruise-o-matic transmission I have. I crawled around underneath and the pan is pretty much perfectly square with 11 bolts. Has no bulges, turns, indentations in the pan from what I see, exactly square. On the left/driver side right above where shift linkage goes into the case I saw a C5 AP 7006 C. Or the last 2 digits could have been a B and a 0. But I'm pretty sure the first series is right, it was tough to see and in a bad spot, had to scrape away the crud. So again, looked like C5 AP 7006 C to me, or ending C could have been a zero. There was also a circle with a 29 in it and another circle with a 65 in it. I tried to measure the case length as best I can from where bellhousing/tranny case started to where it connected to the extension piece before tail, I measured about 10 7/8ths inches. The transmission appeared to be aluminum to me but I'm not sure, should have put a magnet to it. I know this probably won't help, but the tail had RF-C6DP-7A040-A stamped in it. Again, 289 motor, all original.

One last thing, had the filler tube going right into the side of the pan on the driver side going from memory.

Sorry, the filler tube goes into the pan on the passenger/right side.
