Clutch switch for MSD 2-Step

Can anyone give me a part# or a link to a good clutch switch to use for MSD 2-Step? Switch must be normally closed. Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Clutch switch for MSD 2-Step

I used an industrial switch that was made by MicroSwitch. It can be ordered through McMaster Carr and looks like this:

McMaster Carr: McMaster-Carr

Once you get there, type Microswitch in the search bar on the left and it will bring you to the microswitch section.

The same switch is also available from MSD (part # 8820.) It is usable for either normally open or normally closed circuits.

The hard part is making up a bracket to use any of these switches. I worked at it for a couple of days and ended up making a bracket that attaches to the clutch/brake pedal support. My bracket is slotted so that I can move the switch to adjust when the 2 step releases. It works, but I would love to see other ways to make a simpler, hassle free setup.

This would be a great tech article if someone could come up with an easy solution.

Re: Clutch switch for MSD 2-Step

I wonder if a brake light switch could be modified to work?

Re: Clutch switch for MSD 2-Step

I don't know how you would use an early switch, but a switch from a later model vehicle could work, especially if it has an inch or so of mounting threads. Again you would need to make a bracket.

Here is one from a mid 80's jeep which would work:

In the same manner, a Falcon/Mustang 2 wire door switch could work too, if the appropriate bracket was made. These are also normally closed.

Re: Clutch switch for MSD 2-Step

I have a brilliant idea! I have a hydraulic clutch, so I think I will use a
NC pressure switch!

Re: Clutch switch for MSD 2-Step

ok..Not so brillant...back to basics! I'm not using a pressure switch. I will be using a 5-pole relay. On the relay it has pins ( 87, 87A, 86, 85, & 30) . I run my 12v supply from arming switch to pin 30. Then, from pin 87A to wide open throttle switch. This would be a NC set-up. Since the MSD 2-Step operates off ground, I will run the Leg from 2-Step to a steering wheel button...then, from button to pin 85. Pin 86 will have a 12v constant supply. In entrum, when I push the button for the 2-Step, this will ground and energize the coil and the relay will dis-engage power to the wide open throttle switch! Ta Da! I will probably hook up a green light in relation to the WOT, than way I have a visual that the light goes out before I mat the gas pedal. Note to self: The MSD 2-Step leg and wire to pin 85 need to be on the same side of the button and the other side to chassis(Ground). Also, pin 87 needs insulted. More info on Relays

Re: Clutch switch for MSD 2-Step

I used the grounding indicator switch from my old pull E brake handle. Just ran the ground to it, push the pedal down and you have the limit for launch let er up and hang on. Best thing about it is I can adjust it to "flash" the launch rpm a bit too

Re: Clutch switch for MSD 2-Step

Well, I was mistaken about an MSD 2-Step operating off of ground. It was the timing retard that I was thinking of. Anyway, I wired it all up today, and it works great! Below is a schematic that I made using some pictures from MSD pdf's. It ain't perfect but it gets the point acrossed. This is a great alternative to using a manual clutch switch.
