Possibly an inane question...

But why do 90% of comp cars have a narrow track(width of rear tyres)

I would have thought it would have been more stable with a wider rear, surely the friction is the same whether narrow or wide.

My toy one day it will be finshed.

Thanks for any insight into this.

Re: Possibly an inane question...

Could you explain a lil more what you mean?

Why do they shorten rear ends besides fitting wider tires? Shorter axles mean they wont twist as much from the diff to the tires. So you can put more power to the rear without the possibilty of breaking an axle. IDK if thats what you mean but I dont really understand the question.

Sorry, yes i did mean total overall width - so your answer makes sense. I hadnt thought about the axle twist.

thanks

This is all true, but the biggest reason is because the rules all say that the tires must be inside the body. No more 10" or 12" of tire hangin' out of the wheelwell like back in the good old GASSER days. What a shame that you can't run whata brung anymore. I know SAFETY IS FIRST.

Re: Possibly an inane question...

A short axle is a stronger axle, big tires sticking out in the wind look really bad and sanctioning body class rules typically require you keep the tires under the fenders. Stability with 30" tires loaded with 8-10 PSI is not a question - you don't have much, really.
