Re: Big block or Small Block

It is actually a small block, but bigger than the Windsor format. Alot of people refer it to a mid block.

It's got a shorter deck than a windsor (9.2 vs 9.5), but the heads make it seem huge lol. Another reason people misrepresent it as a 'big' or 'mid' block is because of the canted valves like the 385 series motors have.

So a 455" 351w is a big block? How about my 363" 302? Or, the 390" 302 I'm building next year? Is a 360" Dodge a big or small block? The blocks 3x the size of a 302...

Hmmm....

Not sure what you're getting at here...but you might want to rethink it a bit =).

Re: Big block or Small Block

Sorry dude, but there is such thing as big block and small block. There is no such thing as a "mid block" or a "Midland".

Ford designated the Windsor series as the "90 degree V-8 small block".
The Clevelands were refered to by the factory as "335 series V-8".....there there was the FE and 385 series.

The factory Ford literature that calls their engines "big block" or "small block" is rather obscure to say the least....except for their performance catalogs that were straight from the factory....going back to the old "Muscle Parts" factory printings of the 1960's where they clearly distinguish between big block and small block.

I read, did you not read? You still haven't answered my question, dude.

I guess by following your logic (there are no big or small blocks, only blocks), there's no Ford and Chevy...only cars, no US and China, only countries...as a matter of fact there are no races, only people. Hell, we can go a step farther and say there are no continents, only chunks of land...or get biological and say that people and animals are the same too, since we both eat, sleep, breathe etc. We could continue this until there's pretty much nothing bud...but most people's minds are more able to cope with things by dividing it up into manageable little chunks of information. Big block, small block, etc. Not too hard to understand once you re-think it.

So I'm still curious...what do you call a 455" windsor?

Oh, and welcome to FordMuscle...hopefully the rest of your posts are a bit more productive =).

Big block/small block is about the outside dimesions of an engine, who cares about the inside dimesions.

I just have to chuckle at this. This was pretty good to read so far.

Re: Big block or Small Block

is1badford and mario428 are right. Its the physical aspect of the engine. Not cubes. Has been since i started building them in 1970.
