Re: mechanical or electrical gauges?
I've got all three... a mix of Autometer Ultra-Lite electrical and mechanical in my pickup, and digital Cyberdyne/Intelitronix in the Bronco. For looks, the Autometers take the cake... can't beat the 3/4 sweep mechanical gauges. For accuracy, can't beat the digital. The autometer mechanical gauges are a little sticky (tap on the dashboard and the temp will move 5-10 degrees during warmup or cooldown). The electrical have been trouble-free, but even the 5" electronic tach is off by a couple hundred RPM in places. It's just difficult to accurately place that needle on the face. With a digital gauge, you get the exact reading from the electronics, no mechanical movement to cause loss of accuracy. But, they're definitely not as 'pretty'.
