86 mustang, with a ford top loader conversion

Has any one convertied a ford top loader tran in a newer mustang with a lakewood bell housing to run a cable and a long pressure plate and 11' disk. It's for drag racing. I have a 69 351 W in my 86 mustang. It ran a 12.96 with a C4 tran with the 4 sp I hope to pick up a .10 or so?

I have the Jerico DR4 and its like the toploader trans. Pretty easy deal really. You will have to split the trans tunnel by your right foot a bit and box it in to get it all to fit. Lakewood has the BH you need for a cable.

I use a two stage slipper designed by John Medlen. But If you are looking for a good set up I would go with McLoud . I use a modified Stock fork with short release bearing.

Re: 86 mustang, with a ford top loader converion

I installed a top loader into my 82 mustang back in 1992 and found the best set up was a Mcloud long style adjustable with ceramic paddle . To activate the clutch I used a shortened hydraulic slave cylinder From a pickup and a master cylinder from a aerostar van . I tried a cable but had problems with keeping it set up .

Re: 86 mustang, with a ford top loader conversion

What shifters are you folks running on your Toploaders and Jerico's?
I put a Comp Plus in mine for time sake, usually I like the Supershifter, but I am thinking a V-gate or Super Shifter 3? Anyone using the V-gate on a T-loader?

Thanks

Re: 86 mustang, with a ford top loader conversion

I used a Hurst Ram Rod in my car when i first put itgether but after about 2 years and 700 passes ,It would start Missing shifts . I think the spring that changes gates gets week . I switched to a super shifter 3 H pattern . I figured that if There are going to be any missed shifts then it should be my falt not the shifter .

Re: 86 mustang, with a ford top loader conversion

Thanks, is the Super Shifter 3 a shorter throw than the V-gate or Ram Rod?

My super shifter has a 7" handle the Ram Rod has a 8.5" handle ,all the rest of the linkage and leavers are the same . The Super Shifter is a little stiffer to pull . I allso drilled the two top bolt holes in my tail stock from 5/16 to use 3/8 bolts because with the spacers a few power shifts would brake the bolts, the larger bolts cured this problem . Both shifter sit high so the feel about the same .
