Trans Cooler

DOH! Posted this in the Video forum by mistake.

I'm looking to make a change on my '68 Falcon trans cooler.

The one I have is a Derale unit that mounts to the radiator. I am changing to alcohol for the engine and will be using a couple of small motorcycle radiators instead of the standard type radiator, and the core support opening will house the Moon style fuel can.

I would like to mount the cooler down along the frame rails somewhere and the one I have is going to be to large to do that. I have seen these cylindrical shaped units with cooling fins, somewhere but I don't recall where.

Do those work? What have you folks done on your cars?

This is a 351W / C4 bracket car.

Thanks.

Re: Trans Cooler

Mine is in the trunk and has a fan on it. Works very well, will cool the tranny on the way back to the pits.

Re: Trans Cooler

I like that setup, but I am a stock suspension / chassis guy. I don't have a tube chassis.

But you do kind of inspire me. I have an aluminum trunk floor with a drop for the plastic fuel cell sump. Since I won't be using that cell any more I might just be able to rig something similar to yours and still have airflow.

The wheels are beginning to turn....

Murff, you said you will be running alcohol? Menthanol or E85?
I am interested in E85 but it is only available at McCord AFB, Fort Lewis and
one place in Richland the I am aware of. Is there a station around our area that has it that I missed?

Re: Trans Cooler

I will be running methanol, and most likely industrial grade so that I don't have to pay the ridiculous prices that VP wants. VP methanol is almost as expensive as C12 was last year.

E85 doesn't do a thing for me. As I understand from what I have read on various sources, it's not that hot as a race fuel because there isn't any standard set for its production. One batch might be E75, the next might be E92. And, as you have found, it's not readily available around here. I think our illustrious Gov'r is against it.

I had enough trouble tuning for injected gas, that Exx would give me nightmares.

I do have a few odds and ends that are going to be left over if you have a need. Motor plates, Summit (Northern) radiator, small diameter MSD for the 351W, Moroso water pump drive, stuff like that.

Re: Trans Cooler

Murff,
I agree, I read E85 will vary from 70% to 90% Ethanol. Mostly depending on the season though, more gas in the winter for easier cold weather starting.

There is no doubt our government is trying to slow the use of it. Its tough to even talk about E85 in the company of some folks, they start getting all worked up on the politics involved.

I ran an Odyssey on menthanol in the sand dunes in the mid 80s that got hot on gas, after converting it to methanol it ran much cooler and I never seized another motor. It drank the fuel though.

HotRod Mag did an artical about E85 late last year that was very impressive.
The artical talked of guys running E85 with high static compression ratios in turbo/super charging applications that were making gobs of power with no detionation at all. All on fuel that they were buying at their local gas stations for cheapy prices.

I may be interested in the small MSD,but we run a solid roller cam so I would need a steel gear. Actually, I need to see how this entire blown up motor is going to shake out before I buy anything.

Our car is going to Ron Pircey on the 14th for a cage.

Gregg
