NHRA/IHRA fuel line mounting question

I am running a new -8 braided steel fuel line on my mustang and I'm wondering if there is a specific rule as to how many clamps I need or how close together they need to be?...For example one every 16 inches or something like that?... I am pretty much following the factory steel line path other than I am going along my frame connectors instead of the rocker panel..

Re: NHRA/IHRA fuel line mounting question

Great question! I too am in the process of running a -8an line from my tank outlet to my carb... and have the same question.

I cant recall... are you running an electric yet?
If not, how are you going to adapt the -8an braided line to your tank outlet?

Thanks!

Re: NHRA/IHRA fuel line mounting question

Trevor I had a sump welded into my tank so connecting to the line is no problem...I am sitting on the fence right now about what to do for a fuel pump..I have a "street" carter mechanical pump on the engine now and I really don't want to switch to an electric if I don't need to but I am worried the mechanical pump won't cut it?....As for the line I am starting at the front and working my way to the rear so I can still make up my mind about the pump..

Re: NHRA/IHRA fuel line mounting question

I had a buddy make the following changes and he gained 3 tenths in the 1/4... NO OTHER CHANGES.
His car is comparible to yours... a 1967 barracuda with a 400 running 11.7 to 11.4 with the change.
...From a carter mechanical like yours with stock 3/8th line to a Mallory 140 and -8an line.

I am a big believer in making sure you have enough fuel... I personally dont think the mechanicals can keep up... but I know there are others who think they do.

Did you have the tank in or out to weld that sump in? And what did you do with your sending unit???
Looks great... I'm very interested!!!
Thanks

Definetly need the tank out and all the gas fumes removed before doing any welding..Most people simply spend the money and buy a new tank to avoid the hassle..Since mine was in good shape and I had the whole winter to let it air out I reused mine and rinsed it with water before welding....My original sending unit is still in place and is unaffected by the sump..I could reuse it for a return line if I needed to...I originally bought a Competition Engineering sump but it was too big to fit the mustang tank so I had one made by a buddy instead...Since then I have discovered a better looking setup that moves the sump a little further rear ward so it should pickup even more fuel under launch..Follow this link...

I did hard line from the cell to pump to surge tank on the original fuel system on my Falcon, and I don't recall seeing anything regarding amount, style or spacing of the clamps in the NHRA rule book. I would counsel just using common sense (you have a ton of that) and a sense of style so you don't have any droopys in your line.

One thing I would verify is the portion of line that passes the flywheel / flexplate area. That needs to be enclosed in a steel casing or run outside of the frame rails IIRC. I'm at work and don't have a rule book close. I can check that tonight if no one else chimes in. Plus I don't recall if that is still a requirement if you are using steel braided, but I think it is.

Take pictures.

Re: NHRA/IHRA fuel line mounting question

Yes Murff I believe you are right on all counts..My line is outside of the frame rails so I don't have to worry about that..I guess I will just try to keep it up tight and straight along the frame connector..

Re: NHRA/IHRA fuel line mounting question

Welding on a used gas tank can be dicey.
An old friend, Art Morrison, told me a story about a time he was welding a fuel tank that he had put water in thinking it would safe that way, long story short, it blew apart with in seconds of starting his welding.
I have welded several tanks and feel the safest method is to purge them with argon before and during the welding process.
I have also welded motorcycle tanks, by running car exhaust in them for a period before welding, it worked slick, an old Harley mechanic showed me that one.

I hate to see a fellow car guy get hurt, just thought I would toss that information out there.
