Corroded AFR Heads and King Of The Hill

Last time out the Morris developed a head gasket leak due to badly corroded AFR 185 heads. The corrosion was caused in part by running tap water and anti-rust instead of distilled water and Water Wetter. The heads took a .035 surfacing to clean up. Tonight I ran the newly assembled motor at Irwindale and ended up winning the King of the Hill bracket. Not bad for an old guy with an old car. http://bowtie0069.fotki.com/51508irw...x/img5868.html

Congrats. Unable to view your times from that link due to firewall. But sounds like you went home proud. Way to go.

Re: Corroded AFR Heads and King Of The Hill

Great Job Jim. Glad to hear that the ole' gal is back together and getting the job done.

Wow, that must have been a lot of corrosion--.035 off is a crapload. Unless you used a thicker head gasket, you should have gained a few HP from the mild compression increase.

Re: Corroded AFR Heads and King Of The Hill

It was hot out (95*+)the air was bad and the track not prepped well so it's hard to tell if the little added (.6) compression did anything. The car did run 6.88/98.6MPH with a 1.47 60ft though.

The last time the motor was freshened up was about 2 years ago. The amount of corrosion was excessive and didn't all clean up with a .035 cut but was good enough for the gaskets to seal. Anybody running AFR heads should make sure not to run tap water like I did.The guys at my head shop see lots of different brand heads and claim AFR's are the worst for corrosion.
