Re: Another first run with slicks

OK, my thoughts.
1. It is tough to get out of the hole with no traction... its take skill if your starting to slide. I do wonder why with a prepped slick that you are still spinning that much. Any video?

2. 32 total? Hmmm, seems a little low. Mine like 36 total. You should get a digital timer and crank it up and see how she runs. Mine ran like a mule at 32... and then at 36 loved it.

3. With that CR you need some octane. You're not detonating? What do your plugs look like? Is that a confirmed CR?

4. That carb is HUGE.

5. Ya, you could use some 1-3/4 headers.

Re: Another first run with slicks

Addressing the 60'. 10 seconds in 2nd gear at about 5000 RPM. Complete 'cloud' out of both sides.

I suspect your traction is due to axle windup. You need a good helper to watch the rear end. "Squatting" is a bad sign....

I am in 3rd (4th for you) *before* the 1/8 mi. Having the extra gear just means you need to shift faster.

Timing. Keep increasing 2 degrees. You'd be amazed at what 'low' timing can do. My 351C has 12.7:1 and it wants 40 degrees (with 110 octane).
Be careful to look for detonation spotting after each run. You don't want to walk the crank out of the block.

Re: Another first run with slicks

If you play with timing above 36 degrees do it on an engine dyno. It is too easy to fool yourself and put too much advance into the car. You might hear detonation but you will never hear preignition at speeds above 4000 RPM and it will destroy your engine just as fast as detonation.

Re: Another first run with slicks

Maybe I can shed some light on the DOT slicks for you and the snakeing you have.
DOT's are a weird tire and not much like a reg slick in the traction department. What I have found with them on many different cars I have driven on them, is when they spin you pretty much have to stay on the noise maker. They will hook but you have to just drive through it. A hand full yes, but they will come in as they say.
The snakeing you were talking about and another in this post can be caused by inflation as well as winds. Ever wonder why pro stocks have a spoiler but it has no upward rake in it?
This is done because of the wander that the slicks have, it really has less to do with down force than it does dirty air.
Think of it this way, as the air goes under your car it doesnt just wosh through under there. It is tumbling and looking for the easist way out, and that usually means the back of the car.
When it finally breaks free it lifts upward and without that flat spoiler on the lid it crashes back to the track creating turbulance. So in effect the air usually comes out about 8 inches behing the rearward most point of the car and goes up then back to earth due to suction making "dirty air".
This gives you the wiggle you feel at speed and is worse at low air pressures and higher wind speeds.
The flat spoiler in a perfect world is tested for optimum length for the correct air distance from the rear of the car. When it is correct it allows the air out without catching it from the under side and when the air comes back down, catches it from the top side creating yup you guessed it down force. So you just killed 2 birds with one stone.
Hope this helps ya all out a bit or at least gives a better picture of what is happening and why its there !!

Very good info Mustang42782. I've always wondered about those spoilers and your explanation sorted it out for me.

Re: Another first run with slicks

Wow! your car is absolutely awesome! ive got a 69 coupe and im planning on doing a lot of things similar to your setup..408 with a TKO and all that other good stuff. got it down to 13.45 with a few mods but no where near done yet. one question..does your car act like it wants to pull the front wheels? i know your havin hookin issues but im just wonderin if its possible with that setup. thats my main goal is to see daylight under the front tires.
