Weekend Racing with my son's 67
Well as some of you know we had a race this weekend. And to say we were pleased is an understatement. Not that the car performed outstanding but because my son worked his way through a 34 car field to finish runner up yesterday. Quite impressive considering his limited racing experience. He never gets nervous and continues to kill the tree, unfortunately he hit the tree a little too hard and red lit in the final, which is unfortunate as he ran closer to his dial (by .17) than the competition.
Anyway we did run the timing at 40 total, left the air pressure at 15.5. put a known good carb on the car and had a great day. The car improved in all areas.
New best ET: 8.80 at 82.6
New best MPH: 82.75
New best 60': 2.09
The car ran 8.801 to 8.831 all day with the exception of one 8.91 when the enging got a little warm.
After watching the competition this weekend we saw car after car run 8.30's-8.50's running either less MPH or the same. The car has to have a better converter for any more improvement. With 3.55 gear and a basically stock converter we have got the most out of it we can. In addition, the weather was a nice 70 deg, 51% humidity and 29.74. So the weather could have actually contributed to all of our improvements. We will be racing the next two weekend to complete our season so no time for test and tune.
Hopefully, next year my car will be back together and we can have a few father-son race weekends, of course this is contingent on his grades and my funds....

Thats funny because my motor is done and sitting on the stand waiting to go in and you can believe it that he has asked a few times. He would probably be better in the car than I am.... He will get his chance.

Re: Weekend Racing with my son's 67
I raised four boys, and I have lots of grand children now. My oldest son has raced cars since he was 16 years old, I give them engines to put in their cars, and we go to the track to have fun and sort of show off.I go with them once or twice a year and see old guys rhat I used to rce with when I was much younger. Believe it or not, there are only a couple of drag strips left out here in Calif. Very sad. When I was a kid, there were six tracks I could go to every week. Oh well---

Yea, great times with my son right now. We are lucky to have 2 QTR mile tracks and 4 1/8 mile tracks within about 1 hr to 1.5 hr from the Dallas Fort Worth area. The closest is about 15 min from home. But I must say the drag race crowd is getting older. Most of our races are guys 40 and over, maybe its the money maybe its lack of interest from kids I don't know.

Re: Weekend Racing with my son's 67
Great looking '67! Man, I hope my kids get into racing with me when they get older. Both of my boys (7 and 11) love Mustangs of course It's great seeing other families racing together.
Back when I had my old 302 combo, I also had 3.55 gears (I still do) but the best mod I ever made was getting a better converter. My car was runnning 13.9's and immediately went to consistent 13.2's with a 9.5" Edge converter and electric fan. I only gained 1 mph so the converter really woke the car up. I swapped out an 11" TCI 2600 converter for the Edge and it was truly a night and day difference. I bet your '67 would see similar results.

Re: Weekend Racing with my son's 67
Vinyl66: Thanks for the advice on a Converter. He drives the car daily, weather permitting, so I am a little concerned about cruising. He has a good cooler but no trans temp gauge. He currently cruises ar 2300 at 70 so will a 9.5 inch 3000 converter run too hot?

Re: Weekend Racing with my son's 67
Cahorne, the car looks great! From the pictures it appears to be pulling some weight off the nose from launch, I would expect a lower 60' from that photo alone. Anyway I am very happy for you to able to bond with your son at the track and in the garage too. I cant wait for my 2 boys to be old enough to start racing. Actually on second thought it breaks my heart to see them get older, why doesnt NHRA have JR JR dragsters for 2 year olds?

Re: Weekend Racing with my son's 67
Thanks James. Your time will come with the boys, but enjoy their youth. I too am really happy with the front end travel and expect the car to 60 lower, but when you consider the converter and the 3.55 gears it just does not have the mechanical advantage to get out of its own way. I did find a 3200 Art Car non-lockup converter for the car from a friend, but an a little worried about the street manners. I think I will start a post to get some advice.
