With the spray you probably were driving through a slipping clutch in the upper gears. Even so, you were probably very close to optimal. The smell may have come from not being cooled down between runs or you don't have enough throwout bearing free play, which tends to go away gradually over a few runs. Just something to check before you put the base back in it for street duty.
Good Job Mike!

Dennis, thanks for the advice on using the lower hole. It made ALL the difference!
I use the nitrous with a throttle switch, so yes, as soon as the hammer drops, the juice is flowing!
Tires were standard 28x9 Hoosier slicks left over from last year. (coated on the inside with dried Palmolive and all over the outside with Silicone Tire Shine over the off season and kept in the dark to prevent oxidation and degradation.
The track was in excellent shape the first part of the day.
Still using the stock SMALL in/out toploader.
Thanks for the advice on looking into free play. It -should- be plenty, as I've got plenty of free travel in the clutch pedal.
About time for a cage and a bottle, Dennis?

I didn't change a single thing after that first 10.23 run!
The main difference was in moving the bar in the Cal-Tracs to the bottom hole.
I did switch from a BG 750 Speed Demon to the Holley 950HP, and corrected a leaking/bulging (into the port) intake gasket issue.
Nitrous fuel pressure is at 6-1/4 psi, and hasn't been changed in years.
Bottle pressure was 900-1000psi.
Timing was pulled from 36 to 26 on the bottle.
On a funny side note, the race fuel was from TWO YEARS AGO. LOL!
I just stored it in a NON VENTED container, filled to the brim to prevent head space, and stored in the dark. Seems to have kept just fine. It was purple 110 Sunoco, I believe. It was not put in the car until I got there, as was drained as soon as the racing was over and put back into a sealed container with no head space. (empty space above the fuel for it to evaporate into) It will be kept that way until next year and used again. hehe
Good luck on your upcoming build!

Funny thing is I run the exact same fuel pressure and bottle pressures as you, I only pull 5 deg for my 100 shot, but after reading all the nitrous "guru's" at Yellow Bullet I feel like I am running too much fuel pressure and need to take out more timing. My plugs have always looked good, but I can't say I am a plug reading expert. Like you, I will probably leave it where it is since it has always produced reliable safe results.

Re: Going to National Trail Raceway Today
Here are a couple of pics.
First is the $250 tow vehicle with the car loaded up, and the second is the car getting the pump gas drained and replaced with the race fuel.
Nothing all that exciting, but I don't have any good action pics.

Re: Going to National Trail Raceway Today
Do you have any under hood pics with a better view of your air cleaner/feed tubes?

Re: Going to National Trail Raceway Today
I got the RamAirBox from here:
Ram Air Box
It's the unit that uses a 4" filter with the ends 80º apart.
It uses 4" dryer duct hose that connects to standard "hardware store" fittings on either side of the radiator. Square ones shown at the link below: (yes, it is already mounted on a drop base air cleaner)
Snorkels for Ram Air Box
Most 302 1966 mustangs can only fit the unit with the 3" tall filter, but mine has a cowl hood that is pretty wide, so I was able to use the one with the 4" filter.
I tried a comparison a long time ago, and the ram air box with a filter ran exactly the same as the bare carb without a filter. I haven't tested it for a LONG time, though. It's been on there for a good 10 years.
And no, I don't have any pictures currently available. I could take some if you're interested.

The pics at the link you provided gave me a good idea of what you've done. Hope to see your setup in person which will be better than any pics.

It is time for a cage and I have have taken a big step and have just ordered a custom one with swing out door bars and the seat saver option. I did this after I messed around with a length of 1 3/4" pvc pipe and think that I can make it work with my long legs. I'll have to swap out my short back seats, but have a set of 71-73" Mach 1 high back seats in storage that will work perfectly.

Giggly scares me--would be different if I had your professional help though . . . . . . .

A smaller diameter steering wheel can provide some MUCH needed knee room. I installed a Grant GT wheel on mine, and it opened up a lot of room. The turn signal then stuck out too far, so I unscrewed one off an old AMC at the junkyard, and it worked just right. It was chrome with a black tip.
If you ever want to try out the bottle, I can hook you up!
Maybe you can see a bottle vs. no-bottle run with my car some time in person. The transformation might give you a little motivation. It turns into a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ANIMAL! hehe!

Re: Going to National Trail Raceway Today
Here is an interesting comparisson- I built a 408 pump gas race car engine for a guy with a mustang- I ran 10.14 at 133.33 and it made 667 HP at 6700 RPM
It is a C_4 auto with a 5500 stall, no nitros ofcoarse. One thing I do not understand about your setup Mike.. How do you run the nos with a stick shift trans ?? How do you shif with the NOS on ??

Throttle switch!
When the throttle is wide open, the nitrous is on.
There's a small switch mounted to the carburetor, and when the linkage hits it at WOT, the nitrous comes on! I just hold it on the 2-step at 3/4 throttle as the lights come down, then let out the clutch hammer the throttle on the last yellow.
It's nice being able to build a fairly mild "pump gas" compression engine that will do street duty, then be able to switch to race gas and turn the bottle come race day.
You've got to be READY when it's time to go, as those first couple shifts come pretty fast!
It IS fun and exciting!
Thanks for your interest, Joe!
Mike
