I agree. I'm from up North, and 300rwhp can net a high 11 second 1/4 in a 3500 pound falcon thats set up right. Down south they seem to have 400rwhp to run the same times in same cars.
The more people are willing to pay for high horsepower "readouts" to brag about, the more the power will rise.

I use the chassis dyno as a tuning tool. The numbers are secondary to me.

There's more than one way that a shop can make a customer happy on the dyno. For one thing, input of atmospheric conditions and/or "correction" factors can pump up the numbers real quick.

I recently saw a "dyno sheet" with a correction factor of 1.57 which made a 306 cid show 471 hp (engine dyno). Additionally, the BSFC numbers looked like a pro stock engine. Considering the engine build level, not very believeable.

I prefer to have honest numbers that tell me what the engine is doing. That way I can make the improvements/mods I need to achieve my goals.

Different Dynos (MD vs Dynojet) They have different ways of coming up with the HP and alot depends on the factors applied by the dyno operator. Like has been said before, they are great TUNING tools, but can be inacurate as to real output.

\"DYNO INFLATION\"

I know what you mean... I remember talking to a guy with an '04 Mach1 that worked at a tire shop while I was getting a flat repaired. He was going on and on about how he'd put $20K under the hood, and hadn't put any power adders on yet but was planning to add a supercharger... so the $20K under the hood seemed like a stretch, but I wasn't able to say BS on it just yet... so I asked him how much power it was putting down, and he says "over 600hp"! It took everything I had to keep from busting out laughing! 600hp out of a NA 4.6, what was he turning this thing to 9000rpm? So I asked him if he'd ever taken it to a dyno or at least quarter mile'd it... nope. At that point I politely, but quickly, ended the conversation and went back to the waiting room to wait for my flat repair to finish. All I can say is, I SO wish I had my pickup down there with me, so that I could smoke his '600hp' '04 Mach1 with my 350hp '85 Ranger.

My car isn't 'setup' right. So I need more HP to achieve the same 1/4 times.

The examples i mentioned were 351 clevelands running very similar aftermarket heads, cam, convertor, gears, weight etc, and were more fun type strip cars, with occasional street driving. Similar setups and times, just 100+ rwhp different readings.

Hell I would have called BS on him when the guy fixxing my tire is telling me how he just stuck 20k into the motor of his 2 year old car anyway. They must pay allot better at that tire shop then they do the ones in my area. Just go to ANY car show. SAdly, it doesn't seem to matter if they're chebbie/chrysler (ugh), or ford people. Engines ALWAYS put out at least 600 hp, even when they've never dyno'd them, OR had the car EVER at a track.

LOVE listening to the stupid comments/questions when I bring my beater to the car shows.......................usually leave with a bloody tongue (from biting it sooooooo hard).......:&gt
