power estimates on 400 ford

hi, i just finished puttin the finishing touches on an ole 400 thats goin into a 72 f-100 swb, i was wondering what kind of power i can expect from the ole bastard motor, my combo is such, its a 400 bored 60 with a set of TMI inc zero deck step dish pistons that yeild a 9,56:1 static compression with a set of stock 2v heads with a mild port job, a weiend intake with a 750 proform holley, a crane 133042 cam with a 272 adv duration and a .524 lift, with this is a set of hedman elite headers with 1-3/4 primary, i am runnin a stock ford durasparks ignition setup with the heavy spring removed and 33 degrees total timing, i only ask on here because tehre is no dyno around where i am at, so what do yall think? would it be worth 400hp or no, also i am thinkin of putting a set of chi 2v aluminum heads on it in the near future, really i built this motor for a purpose, to let folks know it dont take all that much to make one of these motors run, thanks

Re: power estimates on 400 ford

I could only guess, but I reckon 400 is quite achievable.
CHI are now making a real good intake for 400s now, and matched with the right CHI heads, I think these 400s are going to have a new lease of life.
Like someone said here the other day, don't be surprised if a 400 does real well in the next Engine Masters comp.

I think you're in the neighborhood of 305-320 HP with that combo. BUt that's just a guess, and a fairly uneducated guess at that.

I would think you should be in that ball park pretty easily if the heads are decent.

Re: power estimates on 400 ford

thats good news, the heads i have are just stock 351m castings with some exhaust work, they've been gasket matched on both sides and blended back to a set of fel pro intake and exhaust gaskets, i have also done some smoothing in the chambers to deter detonation, they also have a set of full roller 1.73 aluminum roller rockers on em. i am really hoping within the next 6 months to invest in a set of chi's heads and intake combo and a little more cam, hopefully switching to a hydro roller in it at teh same time

I'd say go with a set of Ausi cleveland heads, they're dirt cheap as far as heads go and you'd get the most bang for your buck. But beware, if the Cr gets too high (and it's real easy with those heads) it'll ping like nobodys business. Reguardless, the build you've got here looks spot on, I'd guess arround 380hp / 410 ftlbs. Good luck man!

Not all 351M/400 heads are the same as some are better than others. You should be close to your goal. How close? Who knows, it depends on the head flow and machine and assembly work.

BTW why so low on the total timing?
