Need Suggestions Mild 302 build

I have a 1968 Torino Formal roof that has a 302 2v and C4. I have picked up an AOD to rebuild for it (any suggestions?) and I want to add some pep to it. Eventually I am going to put a 429 or 460 in her. She will see some strip duty and mosty street fun.
So anywho... I am looking to do stuff that I can do in the driveway (ie, it is angled and I don't want to yank the motor). I would like to see 13s in the quarter. I currently have 17X7 215 65/17 tires and 3.00 open peg leg (for now. Gear suggestions will be nice too...I plan to drive to the track)

so I guess I better get to the point.
I am looking to change out the carb (cheap)
Intake (cheap)
and maybe a cam swap (springs and rockers if needed to). I am also thinking about getting the ole 2v heads port matched.
I think she has like 215hp (flywheel) so I want to get closer to 300hp than 200hp. What are y'alls thoughts?

Re: Need Suggestions Mild 302 build

I think it going to be fairly tough to get that car into the 13s with a mild 302 and stock c-4..There aren't any simple bolts on that will get you there(except maybe a big shot of N2O)..If you are serious about putting a 460 in there I would put the money towards that instead of wasting it on the 302...Now if you can be happy with just improved performance out of the 302 but not necessarily 13s the typical,600cfm 4 barrel, edelbrock rpm intake, headers, mild cam and a gear change would make a big difference in what you have now.....A set of 3.70 ish gears,3500 stall convertor and shift kit in the C-4 along with some good aftermarket heads and a stroker kit in the 302 will get you probably well beyond your goal but thats not exactly a simple bolt on..

You can get well into the 13's with a tame 302 if you use the right parts . I ran a 1982 mustang ,with flat top pistons ,1966 289 closed chamber heads milled 0.040". Wolverien blue racer 292 cam with 512 lift , wiand excelerator intake 3310 750 holley carb , 9" rear 3.89 gears and stock C5 with c4 valve body . My car ran 13.71 at 103 mph . my 60 ft time was bad at 2.30 so my car would have went alot quicker with a converter . My car weighed 3150

It all depends on what vehicle the engine is in...I would guess that torino would be around 3-400 lbs heavier than your stang..

Re: Need Suggestions Mild 302 build

68' Torino are listed as having a shipping weight of 2932 lb - 3514 lb depending on the options. On the low side is a 200ci model. On the high side are the Big Blocks with lots of options, PS, PB, AC etc.

I believe that a 302 could get high 13's with enough work, but remember that the most powerful engine found in these cars was the Ram Aired 428 Cobra Jet motor that could only get it into the low 14's, and that was with good gears (3:90's) and an automatic. That motor was conservatively rated at 335hp. Of course by utilizing modern suspension tricks that car would would now be much faster and run 12's.

As already advised, it would be better to spend you money on the 460 which will give you a kick ass ride, plus the 9" rear that you will need to keep it on the road.

If you want to go faster, cheap, slam a 351w in it for now. It will be a bolt in.

I think the key to your mild setup 13s Tornio would be the converter and suspension upgrades, and 3.55-4.11 gears, with a good set of slicks. Cause lets face it those cars werent tiny....

I like the idea of putting in the 351W for cheap. I might do that and stick some 3.80(or close) or 410s in the rear (remember I have 17" wheels so that should be ok). I think I will do that! Craigslist.Dallas here I come!

I hate craigslist.... just picked up a complete 460 needing a rebuild for $200. Carb to pan with some spares. Guess the 460 project just got accellerated....
