got my new engine

I need to do a few things to finish my fastback but wanted to know the difference between a desktop dyno and real results from a mustang dyno? I had mine done between the engine was finished and should have some numbers in about a month.

Anybody have any experience to share?

I assume by mustang dyno you mean a chassis dyno? Worlds of difference. Desktop dyno is usually off by 10-15% but it can be a lot more, on a rare occasion it can get real close. Like any other simulation put crap in get crap out, it can't simulate and account for every variable though. It isn't terrible for playing around with different combinations like cams but you shouldn't build an engine based off of the results. I admit though it's fun to play around with.

As far as I know a mustang dyno is a chassis dyno and measures wheel hp, and due to parasitic drive train loss will be lower than a engine dyno as far as measured hp. How much hp is lost is determined by how efficient your drivetrain is but figure 10-15% loss from flywheel. There can also be a lot of variation in chassis dyno numbers.

Edit: I see they have an Mustang has an engine dyno nm.

Re: got my new engine

I should have said that as the engine was put together that I asked someone to run the parts through his desktop. The engine is finished now and was curious how close they make actually be.

Thanks for the response.

Re: got my new engine

That depends on how good the information your friend has again, if he had good info. It could be within 10-15% of the desktop, but you should be in the ballpark, I'd shoot for the low end. If the numbers sound reasonable your probably going to be in that general area.

What's the motor by the way?

Someone might be able to tell you about how much hp to expect.

Re: got my new engine

I'm pretty sure you'd be able to get north of 500hp with a blower, might even be able to get 650+ depending on how wild the combo is.
