Considering a Used 351W

I'm considering buying a 351 winsor that the seller claims came out of a 92 F20 4X4. He or someone has put on a carb and headers. Since a 92 came from Ford as an EFI engine, should I have concerns about the carb conversion? Will the stock heads work with the carb intake for example? Anything else regarding incompatibility?

I'm looking to improve the mpg of an older truck still running the factory 460 carbed engine. Thinking of swapping to a smaller displacement for that reason and also cheaper to rebuild.

Comments please!

Thanks for your help!

Re: Considering a Used 351W

A carb manifold on a EFI 351 will not hurt anything, they are interchangeable. The '92 should have a flat tappet cam, and the owner of the engine should have swapped the distributer for a non computer controlled unit.

Remember that a tranny for a 460 will not bolt onto a 351, and you will need different motor mounts.

Will the 351W engine mounts bolt to the factory perches on the frame or will I have to move the mounting point (frame) also?

Thanks for your help!

You might want to consider a 351m crate motor. It is a bolt in swap with your transmission and engine / frame mounts.

TDF;you may want to reconsider your ideas,it takes torque and horsepower to move weight. My 2001 F-250 with the 5.4[331cu.in] gets EXACTLY the same mileage as my sons 2001 F-250 with the V-10!! He and I have run them on trips side by side over various terrain. His truck is a crew cab short bed and mine is an extra cab short bed, both have automatic transmissions. ROY.

Re: Considering a Used 351W

The 460 get's 9--10 mpg on the highway. I'm sure your newer truck 5.4 or V10 does better. That is with my truck just pulling it's own weight. I had a chance to pick up a 20k engine (rebuilt 20k ago), so I did. Way cheaper than rebuilding my 460. Not sure what I will do! Don't need a rebuild real bad yet.

Re: Considering a Used 351W

TDF;not much better,11-12 mpg, best!!!!My old 75 E-150,351 used to get 12-14 best.It is hard to get mileage out of a heavy truck.I drove Chevy-1500 company trucks,4.3 V-6's that only got 14 average.I'm not saying not to do the swap, just letting you know what I have run into. ROY.
